Watching one of the early Family Guy episodes. Crappy quality. lol. So early that Joe can walk and isn't in a wheelchair. |

I'm going to go read in a bit.. Queen of Sorcery, here I come. ![]() By the way, I looked up your Kingbreaker, Kingmaker (or whatever the title was :r ), and the reviews on Amazon were mixed at best. Have you read the reviews? They depicted it as basically 400 pages of useless filler I was going to read them after I finished the Belgariad, but now I'm a bit hesitant. xD

I don't base what I read on reviews, I read books whose plots sound interesting and make my own opinion. ![]() It definitely takes a bit for the book to pick up, but I wouldn't call it "useless filler," It's character and plot development, and much more realistic than a book that dives right into things. The plot is incredibly complex and would not have worked otherwise, or at least wouldn't have been nearly as well done. |

Hm. Well, you've convinced me When I finish the Belgariad, I'll give it a shot. I tend to read the reviews just to get an idea. The ones who detail the plot are my favorite, personally, because then I know what I'm getting myself into. If it's just plain critique and nothing of the substance of the book, then I personally find the review to be useless. |

Reviews have too much potential for spoilers, especially on websites like Amazon where it's just any old person posting them.

While that's true (I kind of like that, though), their reviews are x100 better than BN's, which typically are two or three sentences if that Which means if I want to get a book (well, ebook, which I get from Barnes and Noble), that I have to go to Amazon for any decent reviews.

I looked over the reviews and, from my perspective, they seem to be by people who only really appreciate novels that are quick to action and leave a lot to be desired in terms of character development. I really appreciate good character and conflict development, and Miller is fantastic at that. She also has a good sense of time. A problem I have with a lot of books is that they're too coincidental. This guy arrives and then everything happens. That lacks a huge sense of realism. With the Kingmaker, Kingbreaker series, you have a prophecy centuries and centuries in the making. Asher's arrival gets the ball rolling, but he's only one piece of the entire situation. For his arrival to ignite such a huge unrest that the prophecy unfolds quickly would be completely ridiculous. Miller has acute attention for detail and a sort of domino effect. The "useless filler" is her meticulously placing each person and event where it needs to be for things to finally come together. It takes patience to watch it come together, yes, but as a reader I appreciate the complexity of her plot enough to find that patience easy to come by. Interestingly, the Publisher's Weekly review called her a masterclass writer. |

Sounds like a good read. ![]() On Amazon for the related books (or whatever it's called), I noticed there were a ton listed by her. Have you read all of her novels, or just this particular series? If I like it, I figure I'll finish her reading what's she's written, because from what you've said, it sounds pretty good. |

She has written a ridiculous amount. I've also read Blight of the Mages, which is a prequel to Kingmaker, Kingbreaker. In the original series a woman named Barl and her ex-lover Morg (who drove the Doranans out of their homeland) are referenced a lot, and the prequel tells their story. It was excellent. I've also read her Godspeaker trilogy which is also really good, but incredibly violent and bloody. Seriously. I don't think I've ever read such violent books before. |
