Do you like it when one novel takes place over many months or years, or do you like it when it occurs in just about a week's time?

The dynamism of a well built character is a hard thing to wrap your head around. We can only relate to someone fictional when we can relate them to ourselves. That being said, a good layered character will have a very distinct difference in behavior, actions, or philosophy (sometimes all three) by the end of a novel. It becomes much easier to rationalize that change when it's a process that took place over a deal of time, at least in my opinion.

I prefer it when they take place over a longer period of time. You get the whole story. Stories like The Once and Future King, where you start with the hero a child and you watch him grow throughout the novel are great. You get to see where all of their traits, morals, etc. originate and there's back-story on why they would make the decisions they do. Good stuff. :)

I have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night.

It honestly doesn't matter to me. Admittedly I read more novels that tend to take place over a long period of time, but I don't prefer them. If a novel is well-constructed, it'll keep me captivated if the time span is a few days or decades.
