Jack looked at his friend in the picture. “Man, did she mess him up. He hasn’t been out of his house since yesterday; and he looked so happy that morning… I think he’s home crying…”

---One day earlier---

The boy was looking forward to this day. He was in love. No doubt about it, he knew he loved this girl at first sight. Sure, he had only known her for a year and he was only 15, but he just knew. Everyone told him he should be so confident but he can’t live life on the safe side forever, right? He had been up all night talking to her and saying how much he missed her and how much he loved her and she was saying all the same things back to him. Life couldn’t be any better for him, as far as he knew.

It was a cold, rainy, damp day but he didn’t care. Nothing could drop his spirits. He was going to see her again today. He had only one class with her, but that was enough for him to work the entire day. They had had fights in the past, sure, but everything was healed now and he knew she would be in a good mood. As his sneakers slurped in the mud on the way to school, he zipped his jacket up so the rain wouldn’t hit him. All the while, he couldn’t stop thinking about her. He had dreamt about her the night before; she had saved his life and they had a perfect moment ending with a kiss. ‘If only…’ he thought solemnly. He softly uttered her name a few times before he was in earshot of the public, as a silent ode to her complete and utter beauty. She was perfect, after all. He walked slowly up to the crowd of friends standing outside the school.

“Hey guys, what’s up?” he said with a slight grin.
“Not much, you?” said Jack, his best friend.
Suddenly one of the boys asked him; “you free today during 7th? We can get you a pass and you can come home and skip with us”
“Sorry, I can’t. I have some important stuff to do 7th”.
“But dude, you’re 7th is orchestra and you’re like 1st chair! You can take a day off!”
“No…I really can’t. Sorry.”

He turned, and with that, he walked away, slightly angry that she had this much control over him, to keep him away from his friends. But he knew that the only thing he needed was her in his arms again.

The day began slowly, with history class being taught by the worst teacher in the school. She was trying to explain ancient Egypt, but it ended up being the boy who taught her. ‘Hmm; this is odd’ he thought. ‘She usually has texted me good morning by now…oh well, no matter! She was probably tired and forgot. I will just text her then!’

So he sent her a short, quick text: “Hey you (:”

He waited eagerly for her reply, as she had just gotten a new phone and was able to respond much faster now. Surprisingly, she never texted him the rest of the period. ‘Odd’ He thought ‘but no matter…maybe her phone ran out of battery.”

The rest of the classes went by just as slowly, and not until lunch time did he get a text. As he sat there eating the horribly awful school lunch consisting of some kind of meat and a bread-like substance, he felt his phone buzz, along with it all his hopes and dreams. He loved the feeling of the buzzing phone when she texted him…it meant she cared. So now, ¾ of the way through the day, she finally replied. He was expecting a quick note with a smiley, just something to make him smile. Instead, he got a simple text back: Hey.

He was slightly disheartened at this; he thought she would put more time into it. ‘Oh well’ he sang to himself, ‘I see her soon and then it will all be ok!’.

When 7th finally came around, she was nowhere to be seen. He waited outside the large doorway until the bell rang, but she wasn’t there. He was very sad, to say the least. The focal point of his day, ruined. Even so, he thought to himself ‘She said she loved me…she said she did. It’s just some unavoidable thing.’ Even as he said this, he began to doubt himself. ‘What if she’s out with some other guy…what if she comes home and hates me?’ No. Stop. His mind had done this before, and he had mistakenly told her these doubts; one of the “fights” from before ensued. Apparently I don’t trust her, especially not with her male friends; I am sorry if I am jealous but sometimes I want you to acknowledge that I am there in public! It doesn’t matter how much you say when we are together it’s in the public when you announce to the world how you feel!

He stopped thinking about it and focused on music. He was distracted anyways…it didn’t matter. He was worried something was going to happen. He passed the rest of the day even slower, anxious to get on IM and talk to her later. Finally, he did, and she was away, and idle. This meant she hadn’t been at the computer for a while. Her away message said: “Outtt! Be back later loves!” which was a new one. Usually she didn’t put much up besides “bbl” or “ttys guys”, when she would hang out with him. No! Stop! STOP! These thoughts are coming back again! She isn’t doing something with someone else!

He sat there waiting for hours, doing his work then checking…listening to music then checking…watching TV with one eye and the computer with the other, so he could be the first person to IM her when she got on, letting her know how much he missed her. Finally, he had to go to dinner. He told himself, ‘what are the chances she will get on now?’, and left for dinner. 30 minutes later, he came back to see a new away message.

“Out for the night! No phone, so I cant reach you!”

Pain. Misery. He couldn’t stand a day without her. He immediately called her phone, to make sure it wasn’t working. One, two, three rings. Good, at least she wasn’t lying. Suddenly, her high voice came on. “Uhm..why are you calling me?”

“I missed you.”
“hey uhm..this isn’t a good time.”
“Why?”
“Well…im..kind of on a date…”
He hung up.

He didn’t wake up the next morning, and told his parents he needed to stay home, he felt sick. He didn’t talk to her, even though she tried. He isolated himself from everyone, only coming down for drinks and food. He didn’t talk, didn’t speak, didn’t do anything, because he missed her so much that anything reminded him of her. But obviously she didn’t love him. So that was that. All of his hopes and dreams crushed in an instant, everything he based his life upon ruined. He hadn’t realized he depended upon her love so much, and now that he realized it wasn’t the same as he felt…well it made him sad. None of his friends knew why, except Jack, who he almost opened up to. Fortunately, he didn’t. Unfortunately he couldn’t hold back three shaky words…”It was her…”
