So this is a new story I am working on, I will add more chapters if it seems popular.

---

Ch. 1

The wrinkled man walked up to the podium with a sort of powerful timidity. His presence shook fear into all, and yet inspired confidence. He caused people to stop whatever they were doing, no matter what it was, and listen to him. After all, he should be able to command that kind of respect if he was leading the UFE. When he got to the podium, suddenly there was a hush over the crowd as he cleared his throat. His speeches always started off the same; with a simple statement of the current year. Suddenly the crowd went silent, as scared child waiting for a declaration of his punishment. Then, he spoke:

“The year is 2087. As you know, I am Maxwell Bleak, the executive director of the United Federation of Earth, and I have called you here today because of a problem. Not just the UFE’s problem, everyone’s problem. We all know that our guidelines for your lives are for your benefit, and your safety, and it is our number one concern.”

He paused for a moment. After blinking and clearing his throat, he continued.

“What we have is a rebellion. It may not seem like much, but some…rebels…are attempting to penetrate my security systems as we speak. I am afraid this cannot be tolerated, and I have to intervene. From this day forward, anyone caught not wearing the regulation clothing or carrying a legal ID badge will be taken away to…our facilities. But do not worry, as long as you abide by the rules, you will not feel any aspect of this change.”

At this point, a woman stood up. At first, no one noticed, until everyone saw that she was not wearing standard uniform. She pointed straight at Bleak with a stern look of anger, disappointment, and sheer hatred. After a second, she opened her mouth to speak.

“What you are is not a chairman, not a friend of the people as you might have them think. You are a dictator, a madman, and a power hungry lunatic!!!” She began to scream more but at that point was taken out of the area by two heavily armed guards, and suddenly, the crowd fell silent once more. Maxwell continued to speak.
“This is a perfect example of what I am speaking of. This will not be tolerated, and I hope you all got the example I made out of her. As usual, I will end my speech with my slogan. LIFE BEGINS AS LIFE ENDS, THE JOY IT BRINGS, AND THE PAIN IT RENDS. DON’T REBEL AGAINST MY HANDS, AND WE WILL ALL STAY THE BEST OF FRIENDS!!!”

Yes. Remind me to be dead before 2087 will you? There is no way in hell I would live under that sort of dictatorship. *Shudder*

Ch. 2

---

He was all I could think about as I walked slowly through the garden. His face, his eyes, his smile that made me faint...he was wonderful. I had always dreamed of a prince charming, and apparently he was it. Too bad the UFE's new marriage policy (one of about a million policies instituted within the last two days) was that you had to be 20, so we had to wait 3 more years before I was old enough; that was another thing I loved about him. He was willing to wait for me even though he was 21, one year older than the limit. Once you were "of age", as they said, they did everything short of forcing you to get married. They would have dinners for singles where you were forced to date, they even altered societal standards to say that if you weren't married by age 21 you were essentially an outcast. Even so, he waited for me. This is why I loved Jack so much, and felt so lucky to have him feel this way for me.

Suddenly, I stopped and looked around. I felt like I was being watched by someone. I turned to my left quickly to see one of Bleak's new drone bots staring me in the face. They gave me the creeps; their narrow faces, if you could call them that, had two cameras for eyes and then nothing. And they ride around on air, so they sneak up on you silently! Anyways, I wasn't doing anything bad so I didn't have to worry. I increased my pace and eventually got back to the house, which was very simple at best. A white outer wall with two levels and circular windows. It looked like every other house, all of them remade after the war.

"That stupid war changed everything" I thought to myself as I washed up for dinner. "We were all here just minding our own business and then all hell broke loose. Then the UFE came in and united everyone, promising many things that seemed impossible at the moment; but we listened because we needed hope. Sadly, it turned into a dictatorship with Maxwell Bleak at the head."

I realized I had been washing my hands furiously at this point, and turned to see my brother and father staring at me with a "what is wrong with you?" look. I sighed and told myself, "Calm down Elyse, there isn't anything you can do about it so just try and enjoy what you have."

That was my motto, after all. What can I do? Its not like I was in a position of power, and if I cant do anything, I shouldn't complain, I should just enjoy what I've got. With that, I sat down at the table and had dinner.

---

Later that night, I was in my room and I thought about Jack again. If only we could be in a perfect world, where we could marry right now and go away and live together in a little house by a lake with two little kids... The fantasies never stopped with me, and chances are that is what I would be dreaming about later tonight. In any case, I turned on the radio and laid down to doze off. Right as I put my head on the pillow I heard a crunch, and quickly got up and looked on the pillow. There was a note from my Father. How I loved him, and his little riddles. They kept me entertained my entire childhood. This one was a poem; it read:

Elyse, my daughter, please have sweet dreams
For you this world will not have long, it seems,
For once you regain the dreamy state of mind
You leave all the thoughts of reality behind.

I always loved his poetry, it soothed me. I rolled up the note and put it in a box on my desk, and dozed off to sleep.

Ch. 3

---

I woke up the next morning to my cat licking my cheeks. "Ew" I thought, as I got up and put him down on his bed. I looked around my room; it was pretty nice, kind of simple though. A desk, a bed, a dresser, and no lights; all of the light came from one wall which was taken up almost entirely by a giant window, which let eons of light through unless you put on the blinds.

I whirled to see my father poking his head through the door.

"Hey Elyse...feeling better?" He asked innocently.

I was a bit confused; I replied, "Uhm...I was sick?"

"You just seemed a bit...out of sorts yesterday before dinner. Sorry, you know its just paranoid old me."

"No, its fine; I just needed to think, thats all." And with that we walked down together to the table and had a nice breakfast of hard-boiled eggs and toast. After breakfast we went outside and got a ride on the new tram system; it was too white. Everything that was built by Maxwell Bleak and the UFE seemed to have to be white, almost like the pictures of iPods in the history books. Too bad those caused cancer; it was a good idea. 'If only they thought of downloading the music to your brain, it would have saved a lot of lives.

We got off at Marlbrook, the city closest to our house. Then my father walked over to the bookstore; I had time, as he usually spent hours in there. I, having acted passive the entire trip up to this point, immediately scurried off into the back alley which was the closest route to the restaurant where Jack worked. I snuck over the fence and looked at my watch; 11:32. 'I told him I'd be at this table at 11:30...hopefully he wont care I'm a bit late' I thought to myself. Then, as if out of nowhere, I saw his magical face appear above my head and give me a kiss on the forehead. At this point my cheeks went a blood red, and my heartbeat went up to about 190.

Then we began the usual ritual on these days:

I always began. "Hello, waiter. How are you today?"

He replied in a soft voice, "fine, you?"

And so it went on;

After a few minutes of banter, I ordered a soda and asked him to sit with me. When he got back he brought the drink and told me he had taken his break.

"So, here with your father? Bookstore, I presume?"

"Yes, he is quite predictable, isn't he?"

"Well I'm not complaining; it gives me time to see you."

The conversation went on many different paths, first about life, then love, (each other, of course) even on to what we would do when we were married. I always loved talking to him, and as we talked looking into those cool blue eyes. Then I would admire his rugged brown hair with a tint of black, and I have to admit I found his uniform rather...attractive. White dress shirt and a black tie suited him well. He explained he would be getting a promotion soon, which would let him start saving some money for our first house. We continued on for a few minutes, and then he had to leave to get back to work.

"Talk to you later?" I asked him with a playful stroke on his face.

"Always do." He replied, and gave me a hug and a quick kiss.

As I skipped away through the alley, I thought about how great life was, even with the harsh conditions. I was able to still be in love, although not announce it officially, and at least the extra security allowed me to feel safe anywhere. Well, almost anywhere; the slums were a different story, but I didn't need to worry about that.

---

Later that night, I was on the phone with Jack, and suddenly my father walked in. I immediately said the code words "and ill be sure to remember next time sir". This was if anyone came in while I was talking with him, and he knew I had to go. My father had the sort of look on his face that meant I am going to be nice but i suspect you of something.

"Elyse," he began, "who were you talking to?"

My face turned the slightest bit pink; "it was...my friend Jackie...who was helping me with homework." I suddenly realized I had made a huge mistake; I loved my dad, but he was the most law abiding person I knew, and strict too, and if he found out i was lying to him he would surely find out about Jack and report me.
"But when I walked in you said 'sir'," he commented, "and Jackie is a girl's name, and you wouldn't call your friends sir. Tell me what you are up to."

I didn't know what to do; so I did my normal impulse; to close up and get defensive.

"You don't trust me?!" I yelled at him, without realizing what I was saying. "You dont think I deserve a phone?!"

"No, no...honey, calm down. I just want you to be honest with me. I wont report you to the UFE or anything."

"But you are so law abiding...I think you would."

"Well...although I am law abiding I have my moments of..." he grinned "fun, shall we say?"

I wasn't going to believe that for a second. "In your dreams, dear father" I said in a sarcastic voice.

With that, he chuckled and walked out of the room. I sat there for hours thinking about why he couldn't know about Jack and I, and I decided that I should tell him. First thing tomorrow.

The last thing I thought before I fell asleep was "if only he wasn't so...honorable and law abiding..."
