“Monochromatic” Do you remember your first steps? You were laughing. Slowly, inch by inch, making your way from the door down the hallway. And then you fell, and black dripped onto the floor from your knee. You cried. You feel the same way now, standing outside the door of another building in just another street staining the skin of the country. So sad to fall down and helplessly watch the black pour out of your wounds. Don’t cry little boy. Stop crying little boy, grow up and be a man. Back then you were ugly, but now you’re so beautiful. Standing on that doorstep, you sat down. The color of the sidewalk flowed into your skin, like an upside-down waterfall. You took full realization of your surroundings now, but it was just your archetypal city- gray people, gray skies, gray streets, gray buildings. Gray. That was your color. How convenient it was that you fit into the bland waste around you. Then they walked by you. The two little parasites. You were like them once. But now, you desired nothing more that to be the big evil man with the pesticide. You let them slither past, however. Let someone else smash them underfoot, you thought. Lifetimes passed, and finally nightfall came. Still sitting on the doorstep, your eyes made their way to the sky. Clouds covered the moonlight. They were gray, too, and so was the moon. “Is that all we are,” you thought, “shades of gray waiting to be erased?” With this in your mind, you finally arose from the doorstep, which had seemed to be your home for an eternity. Turning away from the street, you anxiously moved a gray hand towards the doorknob. The door opened and you took one step into the foyer. Behind you, the door closed and you took in the color of the hallway. Black. A thought presented itself to you. “I’m just a chameleon from Hell.” you mused. Suddenly, you remembered the task at hand. You started walking down the hallway. The location was unfamiliar to you, yet you still knew where you were heading. Upon reaching the aforementioned destination, you stepped through the open door. Streaks of gray from the moon drifted through the open window, resting upon her skin. Her bed was white, and so was she. The moonlight turned to white as it touched her. She was beautiful, and she was sleeping. Reaching into your pocket, you drew out a shining piece of dreams and held it in your hand. It was black, just like you. For a brief moment, you smiled at it. Still smiling, you gaze diverted to the girl asleep before you. It did not matter that she could not see your smile. Quietly, you stepped closer to her peaceful figure until you were so close, you could feel her breath against her face. Reaching up a pale hand, you pressed it to your face. To your surprise, you found it had never been there at all. Your eyes filled with black fire as you looked back at her. The hand holding the dream thrust forward. After a while, you pulled your hand out. It was sticky. You wiped some of the goo off onto your pants. And now your color was red. |
