...more of a pompous, pseudo-intellectual piece of drivel. But you may read it regardless, if you'd like:

One of my old high school teachers used to call us the 'Me Generation'. Heh.

I get the social-networking connection, to get it looking neat... sounding just right. Oh yeah, I understand that. Hell, I'm guilty of it.
It reminds me of a quote one of my best friends said/typed [I haven't seen her in a few years, we talk on yim] while we were borrowing avatars, "Avatars are like clothes you wear in the internet." And I didn't realize how true that was until I heard it. That little 100 by 100 image gives you the type of vibe you're after; just like clothing. Were it's all about 'you' and how you dress up your post, just like you dress up your status quote.

The product of a generation that has never not known the internet, eh?

Yes, our generation might never know how to be truly genuine. We're all acting at this point. Or is that life? Taking on the right roles at the right time?

"All the world's a stage,
and all the men and women merely players:
they have their exits and their entrances;
and one man in his time plays many parts..."

-As You Like It, Act II, Scene 7, 139–42.

If Shakespeare came up with that in 1600's, well... perhaps there has never been a generation that was truly genuine? Then the question comes: What is it to be 'genuine'? We can only compare what is considered 'downward progress' made by our generation to the eras before us. But it's all subjective; maybe we just changed our course? Now we're going our own way instead of 'down'? -shrugs-

Reminds me of how I was feeling when I wrote "Curtain Call." The motto of that was the last line, "step out of character," but I meant that more as in step out of the character people make for you. Basically, break out of the "sheep" mentality. But I think life really is a collection of roles to put on. I mean, that's just how it is. What is genuine anyways? How can you know when even you are being genuine?

And now that passage from "As You Like It" only reminds me of Rush's "Limelight."

Boy, do I feel erudite.

Subjectivity is very important to me, heavily informs my Weltanschauung. All that Descartes, Nietzsche and Sartre, don't you know.

And, in response to Mike, I don't think one is ever genuine.

Sheep are very smart, I'll have you know. :P Cows are the animals doomed to 'herd' behavior. Sheep have a chance, I tell you! XD

Dang, I ranted myself into a sheep-human parallel. :dead: Brain fry.

But see, you've proven my point. Sheep have a chance. If people were stuck in the "cow" mentality, there would be no hope at all. ;-D

you make a good point, but I must argue that it is completely possible for our generation to be genuine. Have you ever heard of a police officer or a fire fighter, they see the conflicts do they not. What about drug addicts and people who get tangled in the quagmire of mob warfare in big cities? do they not feel, see, live these conflicts with every ounce of their existence? What about a kid who just wants to be heard, and make a difference, even if they only change on person, are they not, in truth, just as genuine as the people of the years past.

I say that we are genuine, we just have to try to be genuine.

though the Internet sights and profile pages give you free opportunity to lie, people don't always lie, people tell the truth on them. The reasons are what set us apart from each other, there are those who wish to be genuine, and those who wish to be better than themselves, and in wishing this become less than themselves.
