Alright. So this is what I was working on a few days ago. But stopped because I screwed up the ending and I'm not sure where I want to go with it. And as you'll soon read, this is a prelude to the main story which makes it even more problematic. It's kinda cliche - I think I was going for that so it can take a turn for the worst later, but enjoy it anyway. Oh, btw, this is the story the poem I wrote inspired. Chapter 0: The Calm Before the Storm The sound of chatter wafted through the air and mingled with the lounge music played by the band in the corner. Nameless women dressed in cocktail dresses and men in dark suits passed by socializing with other nameless faces, being seen. To Louise the welcoming gestures and smiles were nothing but a charade kept up so rubbing elbows became a lucrative business in itself. But Louise kept her opinion to herself and looked down at her keyboard, hitting the notes to an electronic cover of a Fleetwood Mac song and sang in time. Now here you go again You say you want your freedom Well who am I to keep you down Its only right that you should Play the way you feel it But listen carefully to the sound Of your loneliness It wasn’t the most exciting song but, in terms of vocals, it sounded almost agreeable in Louise’s small voice. She looked over to William, who played bass, he looked just as miserable as she did. She gave him a reassuring smile and saw him look up from under his messy brown hair, returning something between a smile and a grimace. A couple more hours, sweetie, and we’re out of here. A one-night gig like this with tips would pay their rent and then some – ironic that they should come to depend on such a situation they both abhorred. Louise turned back to the microphone with a little more vigor in her voice as she headed into the chorus when the glare from a waiter’s silver platter caught her eye. The glare concealed the waiter’s appearance so she followed the waiter’s silhouette, waiting for him to step into a shadow. He was to the right of the stage when she saw his face - the wide forehead, the defined nose, and the dark eyes that stared back at her. She wanted to flitch - to tear her eyes away back to her keyboard, in embarrassment and panic. However, the performer in her felt otherwise. Instead, she held his gaze and smiled before she smoothly turned to serenade another part of the room without a slip in the music. When the song ended she dared to look back to the shadow as the room filled with polite applause. And to her disappointment he was gone. It bothered her as to how much she wanted to (and even dared to) look at him again, a complete stranger. She stood there looking at the blank spot when she felt a hand on her waist. It was William, reminding her to acknowledge the applause. “Thank you – William and I are going to take a break now, if you guys have any requests find one of us or shout it out when we get back,” Louise leaned into the microphone, her voice relaxed, “Oh - and before I forget, we have this wonderful tip jar looking awfully pretty, yet so empty. It could really use your contributions.” A patron came over and stuffed five dollars in the jar. “Thanks so much,” she said and smiled at the man. William had already lifted off his bass and set it on the stand when Louise had finally moved away from the microphone. She put an arm around his shoulder and hugged him, “I know you hate this, I do too – but you’re doing great,” she whispered. Even with her heels she was still a good foot shorter than William. “Whatever,” William said in his hybrid British-American accent while walking out of her one-armed embrace, “I’m gonna get a beer or whatever they serve here.” Louise rolled her eyes and left him in his hunt for a beer. It’d help him unwind enough to get through the night without any serious damage – except to his ego. William had always hated false pretenses, even more than Louise. He felt far from his dream, she knew. He thought he’d do greater things than playing worthless gigs for fancy people with upturned noses. She watched him disappear into the crowd before she stepped off the stage, being wary of her heels. Before she knew, somebody had taken a hold of her hand to help steady her. “William, go find your dammed bar – Oh,” her voice changed from dripping venom to shock, “I-I’m so sorry. I thought you where… Nevermind,” Who held Louise’s hand was the waiter from before. His silver platter, laden with champagne glasses, was balanced neatly on his right hand even as he stooped to help petite Louise regain her balance. Instinctively she looked away to hide the oncoming blush. Offstage she had no defense against embarrassment, she was only little Louise. “I know exactly who you thought I was. In fact – and excuse me, I overheard what had transpired and thought you might be in need of a drink instead,” he said, lowering the platter to her height in front of her. It was obvious he could see her face now. “Thank you,” she said stiffly and took a slender glass. Without hesitation she downed half of it, ignoring the carbonation as best she could. Maybe she could blame her rosy complexion on the wicked workings of alcohol, “and your name is?” “Shaun Fulton,” the waiter said as she finished the second half and placed the empty glass on the platter, “Another?” Although she dare not look at him, Louise could hear the smile in his voice, amused with her. “Oh no, I couldn’t. I should find William,” she looked around but she was too low and the crowd too thick to distinguish a bar, “You wouldn’t happen to know where the bar is, would you?” She peaked under his arm. “Better,” he said and headed off into the crowd. |
