So I joined this post-Hogwarts Harry Potter role play forum the other day. Here's the gist of the setting: The year is 2050-something or other and the great-grand daughter of Harry Potter has opened her own University in Ireland for graduates of Hogwarts, Beauxbatons, Durmstrang, and other magical schools.

And my character is Abby. I'm not completely finished with her - I feel like I could hammer out her personality a little better. Like how she acts around friends, and her degree of trustworthiness and whatnot. But it's hard because I'm trying to make her as 3-dimensional as possible and she's almost the complete opposite of myself. Also on the to-do list, I have to write my RP sample. I think I'm going to write about her Sorting Ceremony.

Speaking of sorting: it was a tie between Gryffindor and Ravenclaw. I wrote her history before I did her personality - so I wasn't sure if she had a passion for knowledge or not. Finally I settled on Gryffindor because I felt her reason for studying wasn't because she actually had a passion for it but because good marks made her feel better about herself.

If you're wondering about the picture, it's really common in HP roleplays for members to reserve a celebrity to represent their character. For Abby, I chose the lovely Rosario Dawson.

Let me know what you think - would she be a person you'd tolerate, hang with, despise? What else would you want to know about her?

Character's Name: Abeni “Abby” Gregoire
Character's Age: 17
Blood: Half-blood

Abby is average height – 5’10 or so and possesses an hour-glass frame. She has wavy dark brown hair, which she prefers to keep short, never letting it grow past the shoulders. Her brown creamy skin highlights the colors in her otherwise dark brown eyes and keeps her from burning – not that you could while in Ireland, mind you. Her nails are groomed and kept short; otherwise, she has a habit of picking at them if they get too long.

Abby’s most noticeable feature is her full lips while rounded eyebrows and a square jaw frame her face. When she’s happy, her square jaw line makes for a large, dazzling smile. Past down from her father, her nose is narrow and then widens at the nostril; likewise, she inherited her high cheek bones from her mother. While her features are feminine, perhaps even beautiful, she doesn’t come off as fragile.

Personality: Normally an optimistic person, Abby tries to enjoy life as best she can. When faced with apprehension, she reminds herself of her motto: “Just do it.” Since she grew up as a mixed child, she is readily more open to new ideas and willing to try anything – whether for the experience, a thrill, or for kicks-and-giggles. Some could consider her behavior to be risqué or the result of an “adventurous spirit” – in any case, she developed it as a child in Haiti, where adult supervision was minimal at best. Her uninhibited behavior makes for outgoing, if not forward, icebreakers. Consecutively, her actions may seem tactless when her impulsive motto lands her into trouble.

However, this “adventurous spirit” of hers doesn’t mean she doesn’t enjoy a leisurely moment. Abby often enjoys sitting in a corner with a piece of parchment crosshatching and sketching. It’s when she’s enjoying a slow day, a less abrasive, more relaxed Abby comes out.

Interestingly enough, her willingness to try new things also applies to her scholarly activities, especially those where new challenges are presented. However, she doesn’t deal with failure very well because it reminds her of her father’s disappointment. This isn’t to say she’s a perfectionist but she does take the time to sit down and study to avoid bad marks.

History: Born in Manchester, England, Abeni is the daughter of Jacques Gregoire, an Afro-Latino wizard, and Gemma Blake, a Muggle-born witch from London. With both colorful racial and magical heritages, Abeni’s family is ‘multiracial’ in every sense of the word. Although she’s not ashamed of her heritage, she is an assimilated Briton and insists to be called “Abby” instead of her African name. Abby’s subsequent disassociation with her Afro-Latino side causes the majority of conflict with her father, who even refuses to acknowledge her nickname.

Before she entered Hogwarts, she was homeschooled and, as part of her education, was subjected to frequent visits to Haiti to learn Haitian Vodou – in which she failed miserably. She eventually learned to despise her visits in Haiti as an extension of her failure and her father’s disappointment. Therefore when she received her Hogwarts letter she was ecstatic; she could finally be away from Vodou and her failure and start something new. However if it weren’t for her mother’s intervention, Abby’s father would have kept her home to continue homeschooling.

Sorted into Gryffindor, her attendance at Hogwarts became her saving grace. It allowed her to regain her confidence in magic as she learned she wasn’t half-bad, especially when it came to potions class. Abby completed her seventh year of Hogwarts, receiving E’s on her N.E.W.T.s, with an exception of a single O in potions. Dreading going back home, although she’s a legal adult, she chose to stay in academia and applied to University, to which she was accepted.

RP Sample:

Things I didn't know how to add: She learned to speak Creole (and a little French) at an early age because the Vodou lessons were in Creole, the language Haiti's lower class speaks. But English is her mother tongue.
