How to make transparent GIFs or PNGs and avoid small dots everywhere?

The best is to use irfan view to convert the bitmap BMP in 256 colors (8bit) but before opening the image in irfan view, make sure you use a color for the background who should become transparent that is not used in the colors of the character you designed. (use a full bright green or magenta for example : red 0 green 255 blue 0 or red 255 green 0 blue 255)

Then open the image in irfan view and select in the menu Image the Decrease Color Depht... fonction.
On the new window select 256 Colors (8 BPP) and be sure that the Use Floyd-Steiberg dithering box is UNchecked.
You then save it as GIF : menu File, Save as..., choose the GIF - Compuserve GIF format in the Save as type: dropdown menu.
Check the Show Options dialog box.
In this last dialog window check the Save transparent color box and Choose color during saving.
Then you can save and irfan view will show you the image zoomed and you just need to click anywhere in the background to have a brand new transparent image

The process is the same for PNG format but you don't need the conversion in 256 colors (8bit)
