INTRODUCTION

If you're starting on the micro-hero art and don't even know what is Photoshop or things like that, don't worry. Many creators use one little program called MSPaint. Yeah, the Paint you can find in Windows.
You should know that micro-heroes are standarly saved as GIF format. Good! But if you try to save your micro in GIF by Paint, you'll see it'll be really crap. (And we don't want this, right?)
So, basically what you'll do is save you micro in BMP by Paint, and then use another program to "convert it" to the GIF format, appling transparency.

This tutorial will not teach you how to convert it, there's another tutorial for that.
Let's go talk about Paint now.

The buttons on the left are your tools.
I'll talk about the tricky ones.

FIRST TOOL:

Posted Image - The Eraser/Color Eraser:

Stop painting your things with the Fill With Color Posted Image.
The Eraser will make your job alot easier!

First thing you might do is open a template on the program.
Now we'll fill it with color.

Select the Pick Color tool Posted Image.
Now, with the left mouse button, you'll select the basic color of the template.
(You can Zoom Posted Image to help)

Done that, on the color pallete, select the color you want to paint it, using the right mouse button.
(I'll use the standard green)

Now the fun starts! Select the Eraser, click and hold the right mouse button, and start moving your hand.

See!? Now you should be able to start playing with this tool! :D
(and stop using the DAMN BUCKET!!!)
