I’m not sure that The Auteurs is ready for more new discussion threads just yet but I’ll start one… maybe I should’ve managed Erice in the cup or something but eh, I’m too inconsistent anyway So on an old MUBI thread for El sur I had mentioned a theme I’ve been wanting to explore a little further for a while now, i.e. “the supple nature of truth as we gain maturity” and its variations, perhaps along the lines of a dynamic between the dual elements of submissiveness and dominance ordering “a growing awareness of one’s limited awareness” which is of interest to me in how, over the course of the film, the protagonist gains insight and brings reconciliation into this relationship. For example: Child (submissive) and parent (dominant) Illusory (submissive) and real (dominant) North (submissive) and south (dominant) – also a metaphor for the Spanish Civil War in that Franco’s Nationalists advanced from the south of Spain … including variations and inversions on these dualities. In each example here the submissive seems to me to firstly form a false identity of the dominant by way of a) the submissive’s wild imagination and limited awareness and b) the dominant’s adopted/developed persona, and secondly either unravels this façade through a growing awareness of their limited awareness or else fails to do so. And there are some motifs structuring the film such as: The star motif for Estrella; The pendulum motif for Agustín; The communion motif for their relationship Star motif: Estrella’s youthful desire is for something within her father which does not exist as she perceives it. Estrella, central, grows with her awareness and matures as a human being, becoming bright and radiant; she reaches out to the south of Spain. Pendulum motif: Agustín remains in the dark of his fantasy, walled in, hiding, suspended from a static pivot point moored in the north of Spain, advancing a façade of stability whilst remaining unreconciled with himself. Communion motif: Psychological distance between father and daughter cycles variously from events such as a dance at a first communion to a lunch at a wedding and finally, in the words of Erice: “... when he’s about to die, he leaves under his daughter’s pillow a symbol of communion. So it’s as if his last impulse is to provoke the daughter to make the trip [south] he was never able to make – and so she does what he could never do.” Perhaps one’s perception of each motif/theme and variations accrue fresh layers of meaning as Estrella’s – and the audience’s – awareness of limited awareness matures. |
