I'll be doing some threads on individual films, but as a starting point, here's my selection of recommended Welsh films, the best asterisked: The Life Story of David Lloyd George (Elvey) Jerry the Troublesome Tyke (Bilby, Griffiths) Eastern Valley (Alexander, Rotha) David (Dickson) The Other Side of the Underneath (Arden)* Above us the Earth (Francis) The Cow's Drama (Bush)*- thanks to the fine person who put me onto it! On the Black Hill (Grieve) Hedd Wyn (Turner)* Leaving Lenin (Emlyn) Eldra (Lyn)* Sleep Furiously (Koppel)* Submarine (Aoyade) Separado! (Goch, Rhys)* Patagonia (Evans) (the last 2 were filmed partly in Wales, partly Patagonia) Like Hedd Wyn, Solomon and Gaenor was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar (but overlooked by the BAFTAS) not forgetting some other Welsh-subject films, made elsewhere: The Old Dark House The Citadel How Green was my Valley Zulu and some bios of people from Wales: Lawrence of Arabia Henry V (Branagh) The Forgotten Voyage: Alfred Russel Wallace's Discovery of Evolution by Natural Selection Peter Greenaway (The Draughtsman's Contract), Gareth Evans (The Raid/Raid 2), Terry Jones (The Life of Brian) and Richard Marquand (Return of the Jedi) are among Welsh directors who have made notable international films. Cinematographer- director Chris Menges is from the Anglo-Welsh borderlands, Peter Biziou an Oscar-winning cinematographer. Wales has had a fine tradition of acting, going back to the great stage actress Sarah Siddons (and before). Richard Burton, Anthony Hopkins and Catherine Zeta-Jones probably the most famous. My mubi list Welsh Actors and Actresses: https://mubi.com/lists/welsh-actors-and-actresses Dylan Thomas may be more famously Welsh but many films have been based on books by Roald Dahl from Cardiff who also did some screen-writing yet to see: Cameleon (Sherlock), Second Best (Menges), Boy Soldier (Francis), The Maid of Cefn Ydfa (Haggar) The Welsh Connection: https://mubi.com/lists/the-welsh-connection Edited by Kenji, Apr 25 2014, 09:42 AM.

Oh I forgot the producer Keith Griffiths https://mubi.com/lists/keith-griffiths-adventurous-film-producer, best known for the Quay bros and Apichatpong Weerasethakul films. We may tend to think of film producers as Hollywood moghuls whose main interest would be making lots of dosh, but credit to those with genuine love of cinema as a fascinating artform beyond the mainstream. |
