Recently saw Gebo and the Shadow and No, or the Vain Glory of Command and my interest in Oliveira has been re-kindled. This is just a "get the ball rolling" post. .. An appraisal of Oliveira's career by Rosenbaum Francisco Ferreira on Gebo and the Shadow |

I'm still very much an Oliveira neophyte, but for me too, it was Gebo and the Shadow -- the first time I saw it at a film festival a couple years back is still arguably my most memorable Oliveira experience so far -- that fueled an interest in seeing more of his work, even if I do remember enjoying Angelica and Blonde-haired girl (the only two of his films I'd seen before Gebo). The Satin Slipper, which some of us saw for the Directors' Cup, was immensely rewarding as well. I'm planning to watch Mon Cas next, and (still) waiting for a better quality print of Acto da Primavera to appear. Anyway, there's this article on Gebo and the Shadow on the MUBI Notebook. Also, this article on Oliveira at Senses of Cinema. |

He's still in the Directors Cup on mubi, so I'm hoping a couple of films I've been wanting to watch- Amor de Perdicao and Francisca- may still be selected. His oeuvre is still hidden away, hard to access. Those 2 are in Portuguese on youtube, but my Portuguese isn't good enough to properly appreciate them without subtitles. I guess people know how much I love Abraham Valley, and Aniki Bobo is charming. The Francisca article above says Oliveira has been making movies since 1931; I read elsewhere, and prefer to think, that he started the filming of Douro Faina Fluvial (released in 31) earlier, though it's a short, and one worth seeing- making 10 not 9 decades as a film-maker, but in any event 83 years is a long time! The article also gives Amor de Perdicao as 1976, whereas it's usually dated 78 (TV series), or as on imdb and wikipedia, as 79 (theatrical release). Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manoel_de_Oliveira this says Oliveira started making films in 1927- one on the 1st world war that wasn't released Euronews: http://euronews.com/2012/06/01/at-103-years-old-the-youth-of-manoel-de-oliveira/ Edited by Kenji, May 15 2014, 07:16 AM.

I just saw that, too! watching the shoddy existent copies of Benilde and Francisca this past year, (both major masterpieces, imo) made me ache for decent prints. I'm getting weak-kneed at the prospect of watching Doomed Love in HD
