Sooo, okay Bill Plympton one of my heroes will be my first "opening" post for a director thread on SCFZ. Why not? I adore this guy! I amdit, my adoration might have always far exceeded the individual merits of his films as I saw them (actually I'm not a huge fan of most of his animated feature films I've seen - and I've seen all of them), but that's because I think Plympton is a wonderful animator first, and everything else second. I love how he draws, how he animates stuff, makes them move, I am usually very keen on the music he selects for his films (an important thing for him it seems, music), but so far I haven't been convinced by his stroytelling abilities so to speak. I like it most, when he doesn't really have a story (most of his shorts), but also when he isn't intent on "merely" making a pun (his feature films), so I enjoy it most, when his feature films don't really tell any story or such, but are content with evoking visuals and mood for their own sake. Unfortunately Plympton still seems interested in storytelling to some extent, so I guess I really have to stop dreaming about getting more surreal (feature) films from him in the future, and rewatch some films for what they are. But anyways, enough of my ramblings, this isn't meant as a Plympton piece or anything such, in fact if you haven't read any of my mumbo-jumbo and just clicked the links that follow, that's probably the better way to go. Maybe I should also mention that he's somewhat of an erotomaniac/fetishist/sensualist and some of his stuff is fortunately quite expressive, and that's of course also a huge reason why I love his work.![]() For anyone who wants to get to know Plympton and what he does, and also see a few of his films, this lecture he did last year and which is available in HD on Youtube is a wonderful way to start. Otherwise here are some other interesting links: - his website (where you can get some info on most of his stuff that's available, and there's news and such) - his YouTube channel (clips from some works, many complete advertisements he did, and updates on what he is working on now) - his Vimeo channel (which is basically all about his last feature film Cheatin, with lots of behind-the.scenes footage on its making) - another masterclass (from Paris this year, also available on HD on YouTube) - his old website (last updated in 2002, but still quite useful) |

To please the majority is the requirement of the Planet Cinema. As far as I'm concerned, I don't make a concession to viewers, these victims of life, who think that a film is made only for their enjoyment, and who know nothing about their own existence. letterboxd * tumblr * website | |
