BIBLIOGRAPHY (BOOKS - ARTICLES - REVIEWS) CZ/ENG

Since 1994, Karel Vachek teaches at FAMU in the Documentary Film Department, becoming its head in 2002. His films and professional stance have influenced many younger artists (e.g. Jan Gogola jr., Vít Janeček, Filip Remunda, Vít Klusák, Martin Mareček, Erika Hníková, Theodora Remundová).

Vachek’s obsessive, highly original films introduce us to figures who have remained on the cultural periphery and from that vantage point can, in his words, “say important things, even when the time does not want to listen.” ... Mixing cinema verité, improvisation, and staged scenes, Vachek’s polyphonic films border on chaos; yet for those who are patient, his carefully selected threads weave into a fascinating and informative perspective on the political and intellectual history of the Czech Republic. Vachek often appears on screen driving home his points, cajoling his interviewees as he paces back and forth, at times ducking out of the frame or walking away from the camera — a provocateur philosopher of the absurd and the serious. —Kathy Geritz

SCREENING
In a Row, or Eight Hours of Karel Vachek

Sat 8.11.2014
program:
10-13h first section
13-14h refreshment
14-19h second section

A film marathon about the Czech soul entwined in six long documentary tableaux. In 1990, during the election campaign for the Federal Parlament, Karel Vachek starts shooting his New Hyperion, or Liberty, Equality, Fraternity (1990-1992, 207 min), and in regular period he manages to accomplish another 5 remarkable movies: What to do? The Journey from Prague to Český Krumlov, or How I Formed a New Government (1993-1996, 216 min), Bohemia Docta, or The Labyrinth of the World and Whorehouse of the Heart (A Divine Comedy) (1997-2000, 254 min), Who watches the Watchers? Dalibor, or The Key to Uncle Tom’s Cabin (2001-2002, 220 min), Záviš, the Prince of Pornofolk Under the Influence of Griffith’s Intolerance and Tati’s Monsineur Hulot’s Holiday, or the Establishment and Doom of Czechoslovakia (1918-1992) (2006, 147min). In 2011 Vachek finished his (until now) most recent film Obscurantist and His Lineage, or the Pyramids’ Tearful Valleys (199 min).

This DVD screening offers visitors an exceptional opportunity to watch six of Vachek’s cinematic essays — commentaries on the recent history of Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic. Alas, but not in their entirety: the projectionists will choose segments from the films by audience vote, which creates a time-space collage — a nonlinear narrative, mastered by Vachek’s original directorial vision.

Admission free
refreshments at 1pm
with an appearance by the director in the evening.

yes, i spent the whole saturday there... despite called "in a row, or eight hours of karel vachek" it was actually 11 hours long screening

i reached the spot 10 min before the start, but seeing the organizer-dude (there were two) only opening da house, i made a short cruise around the street and only then (last min) entered the place... i was still the first and only attendee

since organizers' intention was that "the projectionists will choose segments from the films by audience vote, which creates a time-space collage — a nonlinear narrative" and since i was the one-n-only attendee so far, i've got the privilege to choose the first screening segment... in the past i watched "moravian hellas", "elective affinities", "obscurantist" and "bohemia docta", so i was basically fine with any of the rest, but i single-voted for "new hyperion"... it is a sort of "elective affinities 2"... original "elective affinities" was made in 1968 showing the occurences surrounding cz presidential elections of 1968 (few months prior warsaw pact invasion)... in my view, it is the best film to the subject of prague spring of 1968... highly informative and amusing, but in a tricky way... showing basically insignificant moments "out of the main focus", insignificant words slipped "off-record" etc etc... i was always a bit prone to exercise an autistic-n-paranoid way of perception trying to catch all kinds of insignificant details, then to build out of them monstrous word salad constructions and then "read inbetween the lines", thus getting "uncensored" portrait of "reality"... i was never diagnosed with autism or paranoia... it is fully "controlled" sense-perception process which just provides a paralel set of data to get the "full" picture :)) ... an innocent word game :)) ... and "elective affinities" makes the same in film... so, when i saw "elective affinities", i felt it as being self-assured my way of word-game-perception is not that "deviant" or "insane" and that it has its "precedent"... thus "elective affinities" would always appear in any of my top ten list or alike... i highly cherish this film, though i would hardly recommend it to anyone... especially not to someone unfamiliar with cz realia and the characters appearing within... when trying to imagine how anyone from abroad might perceive karel vachek's films, i guess it might be something like watching patrick keiller by non-british (though patrick keiller is prolly more accessible to strangers)... karel vachek seen from abroad is "teasing with several-hour-long inside jokes"... in any case, if anyone (non-cz) will ever watch anything out of those several hours long opuses by karel vachek i would really appreciate if he/she would post some feedback in this thread... i would be highly curious to read... so, i choose "elective affinities 2" or "new hyperion or liberty, equality, brotherhood" depicting the first free elections after commie regime collapse... within about 10 min one more attendee arrived and within about 30 min the third, so ultimately we watched it three ppl plus two organizers... we watched ca 120 out of 207 min... then was a time for a new film poll

my fellow attendees voted for "obscurantist", so i re-watched too... in meantime the senior organizer left for a few hours, and since my fellow attendees expressed the wish to watch it full-length junior organizer became agreeable to break the "mosaic" rule of the whole event and we watched all 199 min of the film... in meantime home-made soup was also served to the audience and embarrasingly i must admit i spilled part of it on the floor... i am quite often a witness of all kinds of awkward moments, but only very rarely (due to my rather detached and observationist nature) an active agent of awkwardness... but this time i was (in fully awkward obscurantist glory)... when asking junior organizer for a floorcloth to clean the mess, i tried to rationalize an awkward situation by mentioning "i see now one should either watch a film or eat a lunch, not both of these at the same time" which was totally hypocritical statement of mine, cuz my usual practice is to eat a lunch a watch a film simultaneously... poor junior organizer being very polite person responded "i see now it was stupid idea of mine to suggest to continue to play the film before pause for a lunch was over"... but i had to take back the responsibility for the mess by saying "no it was not your fault at all" cuz it was me who raised the loudest voice out of the 3 members of the audience that we want to eat soup and watch a film alongside (after being asked about our preferences in this regard)... but seed of doubt about my personal responsibility was already planted within my mind by junior organizer... at the moment it happened we watched a scene in "obscurantist" when members of one family were sharing their experiences with violent ghosts acting within their household, moving furniture and even making kitchen knifes fly through the air... so, i played with an idea it was not me guilty, but some mean ghost trying to draw the attention to his/her presence of the "obscurantist" screening... otherwise, "obscurantist" is a witty flick about ppls quest for unknown and mystical as opposed to other karel vachek movies dealing mainly with politics and profane public affairs

next film poll won "what is to be done?" and we (audience already increased - at its high peak it reached to about 10 ppl in the afternoon) watched ca 120 out of 216 min

then followed "prince of pornofolk" (voted mainly by female part of the audience)... we watched ca 90 out of 147 min... subject of this film is closely related to subject of Karel Vachek book "theory of matter"... book’s full title is "The Theory of Matter – on the inner laugh, the division of the mind, and the mid-point of fate"... most noteworthy of his theories is a bit witty presentation of four main creative agents of cz history, the true creative "mystics" among cz public figures of the past, aka two novelists Jaroslav Hašek and Ladislav Klíma and two politicians Edvard Beneš and Alexandr Dubček... details too bizarre to mention

next we voted for "who will watch the watchman?" and seen ca 60 out of 220 min... on a theater stage is taking place rehearsals of "dalibor" opera (by bedřich smetana) and in the audience part of the theater is a selected crew of dalibor-like rebels of cz public life discussing this and that

next was "bohemia docta"... ca 60 out of 254 min... "new hyperion" + "what is to be done?" + "bohemia docta" + "who will watch the watchman?" is called in sum "little capitalist" tetralogy... "bohemia docta" i already mentioned in this forum related to this book about lunatic Jan Lukeš, inventor of 16 artificial languages, about whom i first learned from this very film

as the very last we watched all 34 min of "moravian hellas"... it was allegedly the wish of Karel Vachek himself who was supposed to attend the end of the whole event and provide (based on this early film of his) some commentary to his whole later oeuvre... but maestro didnt appear (which was the only flaw of the day - ofc besides soup on the floor)
