Based on the order in which our 24 managers showed up and called for each one's genre in the previous thread, here is the distribution by groups. I simply took the first six as the heads of the groups and then I just assigned a manager to each group following the order and the multiples of 6.

GROUP A

2A. Brian Davisson - "I WANNA MARRY A LIGHTHOUSE KEEPER"
3A. Mauries - "THE KILLING SEA"

GROUP B
1B. Greg X - " GOD IS LOVE, BUT KEEP YOUR HANDS TO YOURSELF"

3C. WBA - "ME IS ANOTHER: LOVE STREAMS"
4C. Gylfi - "OH! WHAT A LOVELY WAR!"

GROUP D

2E. Brad S - "SHAKESPEARE CINEMA"
3E. Rangurē - I CAN'T BELIEVE IT'S NOT JUST ANIME: ANIMATION"

Some excellent matches. I'd much rather go up against a Yoshishige Yoshida film than a Terayama one.

I just remembered its so much nicer to not be a manager when people start slagging off your films. Where is the blog so I can start watching some of these and freely criticising?

(BTW the screenshot of pigeons that I posted was güney's bride of the earth - orph & E by way of a girl and a gun, and male gaze, and mustaches etc)

Wba's screenshots look so enticing that I almost could be fooled into watching the film. But I know that the minute things get a bit rapey I'll be gibbering in a corner unable to concentrate on the film as such. It's not a moral position. Also a similar thing with gore, though not to the extent that it flings me across the room. Also after digesting a bunch of Richard Sennett last year I'm a little more wary now of the 'metropolis as alienation' trope. But this is certainly more interesting than some of the films I will actually be watching. Will wait for feedback from some intrepid female as to whether it is watchable....

i wasn't slagging off anyone's film. i admit i initially got angry cuz wba informed everyone he'd be voting against me. (but i like you wba :$ ) and i never said it was a moral position. it's called a trigger. you girls can watch it; just reading the description was enough to creep me out. i don't need to relive trauma. life's too short

it's an interesting strategy, picking highly contentious styles/themes/etc, with the hope that anyone who doesn't like that style/theme/etc won't bother watching it and won't participate in that vote, and those who do like that style/theme will bother and will participate and thus it'll skew the vote

it's what i tried to do in the last cup on mubi. i thought, who's gonna watch a 5 hr wenders road movie except folks who know they'll dig a 5 hr wenders road movie? the strat did not work. i was eliminated T_T but maybe "5 hr road trip" just wasn't contentious/off-putting/alienating/whatever enough?

sorry, love the film, but couldn't avoid making a sly comment about the only match so far from which I not only had already seen both films, but in which both are also personal favorites. It's just such a weird and funny coincidence. ^_^

As I have to vote in the end, in this case Honneamise is just the one I'd currently rank a tad higher. But of course I maybe shouldn't have posted this. :frypan:

Indeed. After hearing about some people not being interested in animation, I thought "too bad for the one who chose a whole genre concept around it", but after thinking a few seconds, I came up with exactly the same thought, and it could actually work out, if people will be selective about which films from which matches they choose to watch.

Do watch it, I think you will enjoy it, though I doubt it would come anywhere near the Jancso in your estimation (I predict a 7/10 for it from you :D ).

Well I don't think managers ought to take stuff personally when others start insulting their films. If people start trashing mine my response will be (as Greg and some others have said): shows what they know. I do not at all assume that all the voters here will be intelligent, thoughtful cineastes with impeccable taste. The world's full of barbarians and they, too, watch films.

Unlike WBA I will almost certainly vote for the Jancso because of my bias against animation (save some of Miyazaki and the better stop-motion stuff of Quays, Svankmajer - but even then I'm not up composing poertry to), so there you have it. That said, I'll not vote either way without watching both films or at least as much of them as I can stand. I'm going to see WBA's just because I'm curious to find out how long it takes me before I turn it off (sorry fella!). That and I've been meaning to see that Melville for a long time, ever since I first read his comment that Bresson was his imitator ("Look at Diary of a Country Priest, for instance. It's The Silence of the Sea!" or something like that).

But who knows? Could be the great Japanese rape film of all time. Discoveries of cinema.

Yeah, that's also my approach. :toast:

In an ideal world, all my choices would be hailed as masterpieces of the highest order and everybody on this board would salivate over them, and the only possibility of loosing a match would be cause my opponents would have chosen equally fantastic films. But as it is, I know that some people just don't have particularly developed aesthetic sensibilities, so I'll ultimately keep silent, as every wise person would, and simply hope that time (and exposure to a greater variety of films) will enlighten those mislead souls in the future. :sly:

There certainly are a huge number of Japanese rape films, and though I'm not too fond of such a term, I did manage to see some great ones. But my selection is not one of them. Same as Bergman's The Virgin Spring isn't a rape film. But I do hope it will be a discovery or at least a challenge for everyone who watches it, no matter if they'll come to enjoy or despise the film in the end.

Well, I don't know if it's better than that one... :D Actually I'd say my choice is not quite that good, as I think Confidential: Secret Market (which I also had for consideration for a different genre) is like one of the 10 or 20 greatest films I've ever seen. :P

And Noboru Tanaka is one of the most talented (imo) and renowned (domestically) Japanese filmmakers (for example Confidential: Secret Market was voted into Kinema Junpo's Top 100 of best Japanese films of all time).
