I only recognize about half the directors or films in the picks so far and some of them I've wanted to see for a long time, like Le silence de la mer and Eros + Massacre.
Watching another Jancso film will be cool, seeing The Red Psalm at 11AM dead tired after a sleepless night meant that I felt it flew right over my head.
The best thing though is that all these films are new to me and this is gonna be great :cheer:
Was reading a bautifully written and very insightful 85 page chapter on Jansco in a book on Hungarian cinema from the 70s today and really wanna (re)watch some early Jancsos know!

I''m also planning on rewatching all the films I already know for the cup anyway (if I find the time, that is) and am hoping for new insights (never liked Eros + Massacre for example, but it has one of the greatest and most gorgous actresses of all time in the cast - <heart> Kazuko Inano <heart> - so I'm very much looking forward to it once more. :sly: )

Yeah, I'll try to get better quality (I know, if I had SD display this probably wouldn't be an issue...) from other places. But in the case that I can't get 'em, I guess I will just have to refrain from certain matches. :-/

Having an HD display an a blu-ray drive seemingly isn't always an advantage. :'(

EDIT: The treacherous thing is that often when I click on a link, the picture quality seems fine or even great in a small display window (like Youtube's). But then I click on the full-screen option and damned! :suicide:

^ that means no lighthouse movies :'(

how can a person live without lighthouse movies?

I will talk breathlessly about Spanish and Portuguese cinema, João César Monteiro, Ritwik Ghatak, and Jacques Rivette, and hardly ever about anything else.

Don't worry, as I said, I'll try to get good copies from the net if possible, and I already snatched a fine copy of Epstein's Le tempestaire from SMz last week. ;)

i've seen much worse.
If it would appear like on your pic, that would still be alright with me.
Unfortunately the YouTube version Karl linked to looks much worse on my display (at least in full-screen, and I refuse to watch it in a small box, the size of your above pic).

It's totally pixelated (I'd guess the compression of the upload is way too low), nowhere as bad as the pic below, but just so you get a general idea of my problem:

I am not sure I understand the SD/HD issue being discussed here but I would suggest playing the vimeo links on the blog at high definition to get best quality. Also please inform us if any links are blocked or not visible. I believe Meg and M Penalosa have also jumped in to get films uploaded faster on the blog so many thanks to them.

Yes, Meg and M_Penalosa are a great support for us too. We hope to have the missing films by the end of the week.
Please inform us about any technical issue. Thanks for all the patience.

* The link we have for "Frida" cannot be seen within the U.S. We will prepare an alternative option to watch it, soon.
* We will provide English subs for Rodrigo D.

LOL!! don't tell us which ones... til later :sh:

edit: ok i've already got a clue from letterboxd....

i'm gonna rewatch my jancso tmrw since i haven't seen it in awhile and i want to write something coherent. if we get the films together in the next week will we possibly start the voting earlier? i don't want to watch too many too soon or they won't be fresh in my mind ;)

I noticed that YouTube significantly reduces the quality of films uploaded, so I'll just wait some better option & suggestions where should I upload my 2nd pick.
Mario, that link you provided does not have English subtitles. Do you have a version with English subs or do you want us to upload it?

A copy of "Frida" is on Youtube, just sans subs. But the copy there can be downloaded and subs are available elsewhere online (at least this is what I've done). Hope it's better than the Salma Hayek English-language version from a few years back!

I am not sure I understand the SD/HD issue being discussed here
It's just that low quality rips and such look even worse on a HD display. ;)

Can't we get more films for the cup in HD uploads? It's not about the films themselves being in HD, but that the upload even of a very poor quality rip could be done much better. For example most of the Youtube uploads look atrocious, while on the other hand most of the Vimeo stuff looks very good!

I'm not tech savvy myself so I don't know how difficult this is or if it is possible at all and I certainly don't wanna denigrate the great effort put into this by the uploaders. :toast:

Maybe my standards are too high, but I generally want to actually seeand hear a film in good quality if it is available as such (meaning available anywhere, basically). Why look at an ugly, washed-out, pixelated mess? Would anyone seriously try and evaluate a painting by Da Vinci that way?
I doubt it.

youtube has really bad compression! vimeo is slightly better. honestly i don't know why people are still uploading to awful streaming sites rather than putting on private dropbox or other things. streaming and streaming uploads take more bandwidth! and flv compression is the worst!

the file for my third film is 2.58 gigs large and is in 720p :) that should compensate for the less-than-average quality of my second film (which is the only version available anywhere as far as I know)

i think they tried using download links in one of the first cups but participation really fell off or something. seems like a great option for people who don't mind downloading (probably covers everyone here). youtube is increasingly difficult about copyrights too. i don't know how to use dropbox but i sent all my files to rohit via wetransfer. links are only good for seven days though

that was freaky, I read that and immediately thought like the tacos then clicked on it lol

The cloud idea is a good one, will upload films to there as well ...all I have to do is share via people's email and it's instantly available to view through the streaming function

Well in this case rather than me doing it folk should just do what I do: download the movies off Youtube with Youtube Downloader, then do a Google search for the subs, slap the movie and the subs onto a hard drive, plug the hard drive into the back of the tele, and voila! there it is. Anyone can do it!
