I was chatting with someone about the best films of 2014 the other day and they said that Xavier Dolan's Mommy was their favourite. So I did a bit of research on Dolan and it seems that for someone so young, he's only twenty five, he’s already put together an impressive body of work and seems to have a pretty big future. I’m interested in checking out his work and I'm looking for recommendations. So what are his best films? It seems that I killed My Mother and Mommy are his most lauded.
Chuggers fear me.

The new Adele video is my first Dolan film. Does he get paid by the focus rack?

Tried to watch his first film a long time a ago (I killed my mother, I believe), but had to give up after 10 minutes cause it was, well, not so interesting. Afterwards some cinephile friends who had somewhat similar tastes like mine told me they had watched another film of his at the cinema and thought it was terrible. So I didn't bother anymore with the guy. But hey, maybe his new stuff is interesting? As I actually don't know shit, cause I haven't seen any of his stuff. So...

To please the majority is the requirement of the Planet Cinema. As far as I'm concerned, I don't make a concession to viewers, these victims of life, who think that a film is made only for their enjoyment, and who know nothing about their own existence.

I've only seen Mommy which seems to be the best place to start, although whatever that sex/incest/sexual deviancy movie is sounds pretty decent.

his films are for young people in my view. I certainly don't relate to them in any way.

Mommy is his best though, at least out of the ones I've seen.

He definitely has talent but the praise is overboard due to his age I suspect.

I agree, Dolan's films are very much meant for those in their late teens and early twenties. When I was 17 and just beginning to explore foreign cinema, his films were some of the first I would watch repeatedly. I hailed him as some sort of cinematic god during this period and looked at his work through rose tinted glasses, everything from the form to the content was perfect in my eyes. However a year after this phase I revisited his films and was not impressed. Perhaps, I'd grown cynical in this time but his form seems like it would work perfectly for music videos (which he is pursuing) in opposition to narrative cinema. His debut 'I Killed My Mother' on reflection to me plays out more like a comedy than a drama and I can't take it seriously especially the scene I have accompanied below. 'Mommy' is currently my favourite of his films but I do wish him luck in the future and hope his American debut succeeds.
