THE VAMPIRE – 0 THE GIRL IN THE RUMOR– 1 no brainer for a naruse fan. i do enjoy painlevé but it's a bit too slight for this match |

oh, it's another of those unfair matchups between a brilliant director's excellent feature film and an excellent short. i was tempted to be contrarian and go for the short, because i did like it a lot, but the humor of the naruse is too much (along with all of the desperation and struggle, of course). i think i would have liked the painlevé a bit more if it had focused on the "vampire" throughout, rather than with the lead-up, but i do like what mesnalty is doing with the genre. the vampire – 0 the girl in the rumor – 1 |
| I will talk breathlessly about Spanish and Portuguese cinema, João César Monteiro, Ritwik Ghatak, and Jacques Rivette, and hardly ever about anything else. | |

I figured I was likely to get crushed in this match (doubly so when I saw I was up against Naruse), but I'm happy just to show some interesting films. |

The Naruse didn't do that much for me (decent Naruse, nothing special), while the Painleve was great! Didn't think it would go this way, but The Vampire wins this match easily. the vampire – 1 the girl in the rumor – 0 Edited by wba, May 26 2015, 04:39 PM.

To please the majority is the requirement of the Planet Cinema. As far as I'm concerned, I don't make a concession to viewers, these victims of life, who think that a film is made only for their enjoyment, and who know nothing about their own existence. letterboxd * tumblr * website | |

THE VAMPIRE – 0 THE GIRL IN THE RUMOR– 1 The Vampire was incredibly creepy, and I have to confess to knowing nothing about Painleve's films beforehand. That vampire bat makes Count Orlok look rather cuddly after watching it go for the numbly compliant guinea pig's face. A great pick and I'll most definitely be watching the director's other films as soon as possible. I had to vote for the The Girl in the Rumor though, as soon as the opening exposition was through it ran like clockwork. And the way it wrapped up the conclusion with such ease and precision was a joy. There's something wonderful about watching a family unravel so expertly, but maybe that says more about me. Great choices and I should congratulate you on the run times too. It at least means I'll definitely be able to fit all 4 films in this week, if nothing else!

Enjoyed Naruse's Girl, though wonder at the break-neck speed. Found Painlevé's surreal Vampire humorous in it's intro and creepy in it's bloodletting, reminding me of those Pavlov Institute experiment films, but with a wicked sense of scientist humor. Naruse's Girl is remarkably tight for such a multi-faceted yet short dramatic feature, unfortunately placing my opinion of Painleve's Vampire as a worthy and unique film, but my second choice. I just finished Ford's Long Voyage Home, and perhaps my admiration for laurel-headed film-makers who can reduce a story's flow, imagery, characterizations and story points to their absolute essentials (and yet leave this viewer more than satisfied) offers a wealth of directorial technique which is to be always cherished. As someone has already mentioned, comparing features and short subjects is difficult. Painlevés Vampire, one of the 200 short science films he shot, edited, even scored, is more ambitious and more likable than others I've seen. But, this is certainly a match of strength against strength. Naruse's Girl is pretty rugged competition for any director's film even one as historically revered as Painlevé, opening, as he did, scientific study onto entertainment, surrealism, "science as fiction," all which are found in his grotesque little bat on those boney-legged wings and the nightmarish maw. Good choices, both. . . but wait a minute, something's happening, some cut-out clippings from a Max Ernst collage have stolen my eyes, my sub-atomics are atomizing, I'm feeling queer in his stove-pipe hat. Oh my stars, I can't vote for Naruse's tender gifts, there's a weird monstrous bat who might look better in my top hat that is nastily close to my throat. "Tenacious creepy bastard, leave me alone . . . okay, okay, leave me alone. I'll change my vote, just fly out that broken window and leave me to my docile California imagery. . . OKay, I'm convinced--you hold Satan's strength, I surrender:" THE VAMPIRE – 1 THE GIRL IN THE RUMOR– 0 "Exorcizo te, omnis spiritus immunde, in nomine Dei." THE VAMPIRE – 0 THE GIRL IN THE RUMOR – 1 The Vampire was an interesting discovery. I had never heard of Panlieve before and I am glad to have discovered his cinema through this film. I would have enjoyed biology much more in school if they had shown Panlieve's films. The Girl in Rumor with a runtime of less than an hour is a great lesson in economy in cinema. At no point does the film appear rushed and the climax has to be one of the best I have seen from Naruse who has no dearth of great climaxes in his filmography. Good match. ok you've been chosen do you know that? give up law and go into animal protection of some kind. Or when you get your degree, work for Voiceless or some such organisation. Most people don't feel the rage you're feeling. It 's a gift. But you have to calm the violence in response (as in, find an inner system to sustain the thousand shocks) or you'll work against yourself. And change. And alienate others. I've been there. |

hi meg, thank you. you are right. i don't mean to be insulting everyone. i know not everyone sees things through the same lens as me. i was very upset when i wrote all that i just find it surreal that this is the second time in this cup that there's been no tw for animal abuse. last time the perpetrator was the person mesnalty battled--so surely he saw my complaints i guess tho, and this is indicated by responses to this film in general, that the issue is that most people aren't considering this animal abuse. and this is boggling my mind! this isn't a nature doc. two animals (mammals, no less) were placed together in an artificial interaction with the hope of seeing one attack the other. are we romans? are we that desensitised? who can watch this without feeling rage and sadness? |
