Why did I choose this one for my genre (it's still all about LOVE STREAMS:ME IS ANOTHER, in case we forget while marvelling at the different films and their many different qualities)? Naturally, I chose the required seven films because of my genre - no, it wasn't just Travolta's crotch :sly: - and so this one hasn't much to do with Dominik Graf per se (though he's still one of the best filmmakers in my book), nor with the innovative and grandiose use of the digital photography (MiniDV, I believe) by ace cinematographer Benedict Neuenfels, but is more or less all about the screenplay by longtime Graf-collaborator Markus Busch - his story, his characters and of course the way they are presented. Dominik Graf has famously said on numerous occasions that his films are as good as they are because of his various gifted screenwriters (though he has also proved that he's a bit modest, as he could and did write many excellent screenplays for some of his works himself). Starting out as a writer (and musician!) certainly helps to appreciate a good script when one gets the possibility to shoot one, and Graf has had the good fortune to have gotten some of the best during his last 30 years as a filmmaker. And sometimes I'm even tempted to believe him when he says that really all he tries to do is staying as faithful as possible to those genius screenplays, while trying to film each and every page, every description and every line of dialogue as if your life depended on it.

I actually don't want to write much about DER FELSEN (literally meaning THE ROCK), as I want everyone here coming as fresh as possible to the experience of the film - and yes ,I believe that's also very important for the other films I chose for this genre: you should experience them, rather than merely "watch" them and analyse them (in a worst case scenario in a rather dry, detached and clinical way...), try to immerse yourself in the various worlds presented, like you would try to immerse yourself in the psyche of a character in a great (first person) novel, for I think that most of the films I want to present (I know, this is the last one :sh: ) are confessions of one sort or another, confessions by their directors, by the actors, by the cinematographers and, of course, especially by the writers (my ultimate film in the cup would have been from a script adpated by one famous french author from the story of another famous one - there was some enthusiastic mentioning of one of those author's own films on SCFZ lately, for those who want to figure out at which film I'm hinting :shifty: ). What binds them all together? I'd say your guess is as good as mine (and you'd probably only really know if you'd have the chance to watch all of my films, anyway :P ), so I'll keep you guessing.

I hope you'll enjoy The Rock as much as I did.

To please the majority is the requirement of the Planet Cinema. As far as I'm concerned, I don't make a concession to viewers, these victims of life, who think that a film is made only for their enjoyment, and who know nothing about their own existence.

What a coincidence!
Next week I will be able to watch DER FELSEN at the cinema, from a 35mm print, no less, which will be my first time.
Can't wait! :cheer:

Yeah, yeah yeah
Was great and different again. And the DV looks weird on film.
Will probably write something about it (in German, though :sly: )
