I briefly mixed up Thomas the Impostor with Thomas the Obscure and was rather amazed that they had made a movie out of a Maurice Blanchot novel... the Cocteau adaptation is less interesting, but a solid film. I liked the humor, especially the bit with the tarot card reader, in part because it felt so out of place.

Eureka was longer than I would have liked, but cinematographically stunning. The switch to color is something that's been done many times, but the helicopter shot made the ending truly exhilarating, since it was like the film was literally lifting itself out of the low circles in which its characters had been trapped.

I will talk breathlessly about Spanish and Portuguese cinema, João César Monteiro, Ritwik Ghatak, and Jacques Rivette, and hardly ever about anything else.

2 fine films, though I've always thought Eureka an exceptional work and continue to do so.

Thanks Rischka. Yes, my purpose is to give these films a bit of exposure, even when they are not masterpieces. What I appreciate in them is the way they use different solutions for the persistent situations of "mascarade", "impersonation", "unmasking". Those are script decisions mostly and whether they are interesting or not, maybe can be taken into account by people interested in writing for film or tv.

Eureka's slow-paced and meditative journey was simply beautiful to follow. Yes, the film clocks in at nearly four hours, but in my opinion it was absolutely necessary to give the viewer that much time with the characters in order for us to see and feel how one traumatic experience can change people forever. The cinematography was gorgeous and the actors all delivered heartfelt portrayals of these lost souls. The magic is in the little moments where the kids connect with Makoto. And that final scene truly was special!

Thomas the Impostor has that quintessential Franju feeling, playing with shadows and light and spicing things up with small surreal touches. That dreamlike quality that Franju often creates in his films is also present here. Maybe not on a par with his greatest films, but still very good and interesting.

Great start to Round 3, thanks to both managers :toast:

Well I'd seen EUREKA before and watched THOMAS THE IMPOSTER just prior to leaving for America!, where I am now and will remain for the next three weeks. So I doubt I'll get to watching much for the cup, surrounded by relatives as I am, quite the reverse of my usual oodles of solitary free time. A shame because Round Three looks to be the best so far.

In one of his books on Japanese film Donald Richie called Aoyama one of the recent generation of filmmakers that prize hip posturing and cool violence above knowing things, having something to say, ability to create character and story, and the rest of that passé stuff, and though I've only seen EUREKA - which seems the only one of Aoyama's anyone's seen - I get a bit of what Richie's talking about. I watched an hour and a half of it again before leaving for America! just to make sure that I wasn't mistaken in my initial evaluation (I've only seen it once through, a few years ago), to recall just what it was that had rubbed me the wrong way.

When you have a four-hour movie shot in black and white where characters walk through bleak landscapes looking emotionally numb you're pretty much announcing yourself Important. However, there's a big difference between seeming important and being important. The first's something that any Paul Haggis can do. I'll give Aoyama a little credit for trying, but he just doesn't have the chops to pull it off. The victims-of-horrible-crime-try-to-piece-their-lives-together is hardly an uncommon scenario; it's certainly been fodder for enough middling American movies questing for weight. Does Aoyama bring anything new or interesting to the table? For me, no. The best scene of the film remains the first, which is superb. Wish the rest of the movie were as forceful and concise. The director tips his hand when he introduces a) the comedy relief character, because he knows he doesn't have enough to go on with the bus driver and the silent kids to sustain a really really long movie, and, far more damagingly, b) the serial killer element, which is bad enough in its lead-footed function of sexing up the gloomy trauma stuff, and only worse in that it's pretty easy to whittle down who the perp is (then groan and forehead slap when you find out you're right). The movie looks great, I won't deny it, but as the man says, when the only thing you have to praise a movie for is its cinematography it wasn't any good.

THOMAS on the other hand was excellent until its too-hasty finish. Franju is incapable of making a movie without interesting things in it, even if glory usually eludes him.

I'll grant karl some of the points he made, but

not this one. Four hours of often-stunning cinematography is an accomplishment! It's a different kind of accomplishment than...other kinds of accomplishments, and it's a lesser accomplishment than four hours of often-stunning cinematography in the service of narrative/conceptual brilliance... but still, nothing to sneeze at.

I've had a bit of a reversal on this one. The more I think about Thomas the Impostor the more I like it.

And the more I think about Eureka the less I like it.

I could go either way, but the humour tips it for Thomas the Impostor.
