LOVE LIGHT – 0 SEASHORE VILLAGE – 1 Very cool to see a film officially directed by that prolific screenwriter, Frances Marion. But ironically it's the film directed by a man in this match that's more interestingly feminist, starting out as if it's going to be a standard man-versus-sea tale before quickly choosing instead to focus on the women left behind. Seashore Village is the first pre-1990s Korean movie I've seen, and it was a good introduction. By the way - the title of this thread is duplicated from the other match... |

There were more scenes of attempted rape in Seashore Village than there have been in the entire cup so far. But it made up for it with a strong sense of family and, as others have mentioned, female camaraderie, along with urgency in its storytelling and dialogue that played out to devastating effect. The film sensitively handled a lot of characters, resulting in a work of moral complexity and aesthetic sensuality.![]() I figured Seashore Village had my vote in the bag...if only The Love Light didn't turn out to be one of the most emotionally turbulent films I've ever seen, something made all the more impressive by the complete lack of dialogue and music. It's a real testament not only to Frances Marion but Mary Pickford, who has a wonderfully versatile screen presence. With these two at the helm, the film turned out to be unexpectedly hilarious at the start and gut-wrenching as it progressed. A real emotional rollercoaster, and a mini-epic of sorts. There was one scene near the end where two of the characters are outwardly laughing while suppressing tears, which nicely encapsulated my own feelings! ![]() A great match-up, with the two films being my favourites from their respective genres in the Group Stage, so a big thanks to both managers. LOVE LIGHT – 0 SEASHORE VILLAGE – 1 The first film I've seen starring America's sweetheart, so that was kinda exciting. Pickford reminded me of Lillian Gish here, her smiles and tears didn't need any background music to hit the viewer right in the heart. Exploring the effects of the war on both soldiers and those waiting back home, I really enjoyed this early silent classic. But Seashore Village gets my vote here, what a film! Following these women in their daily routines was fascinating, as the dialogue and the performances felt so natural and real. At times I was reminded of both Naruse and Mizoguchi, the doomed relationship between the woman and her man. This film was a wonderful discovery for me. |

To please the majority is the requirement of the Planet Cinema. As far as I'm concerned, I don't make a concession to viewers, these victims of life, who think that a film is made only for their enjoyment, and who know nothing about their own existence. letterboxd * tumblr * website | |

LOVE LIGHT – 0 SEASHORE VILLAGE – 1 Love Light was great, although I felt like I liked it less as it went on. Maybe the idea was better the actual film by the end. Seashore Village was the real surprise, and perhaps the best discovery of the competition so far. It's wonderful to look at, I'm sure watching it without the subtitles might have enhance the film in many ways! But the most interesting thing about it is the way the deaths of the 3 men were handled. The true tragedy would have been if the final 2 deaths hadn't have happened. And even her original husband was portrayed as pretty repressive. A wonderful film! |

I did watch it with the subtitles. I meant watching it without them would have been interesting too! I don't know if anyone else does that, but I sometimes watch foreign language films minus the subtitles when I watch them the second time round. I must see more of the Kim Soo-yong's films. He has more than a hundred films listed on imdb, I'd never even heard of him though. Edited by The New Janitor, Jun 22 2015, 05:01 PM.
