perceval le gallois – 1 27 down – 0 really enjoyed 27 down: editing, sound, acting, pretty much all of it. but i'm going to vote for one of the rohmers that made me really start enjoying rohmer (and the fact that it reminds me of, and probably influenced, silvestre doesn't hurt.) |

PERCEVAL LE GALLOIS – 1 27 DOWN – 0 I enjoyed both movies a lot, but I have to give Rohmer the vote for making a movie unlike anything I've seen before. It feels like what medieval movies would have looked like if they had had the technology back then. It's especially interesting how Rohmer mostly updates Chretien de Troyes' verse to modern French, but keeps a few archaisms in there. It's pretty funny when they're talking about kissing using the verb baiser, which originally meant "to kiss" but now basically just means "to fuck." |

![]() tough choice as i really enjoyed both films. as brian said perceval is much like silvestre, with a touch more humor. i almost expected the singers would break out with "the tale of brave sir robin" from monty python's holy grail. but i think i'm going with the wonderful indian trains... This is damn tough, Perceval was such an achievement and enjoyed it thoroughly from start to finish, but Sanjay's deeply touching helter skelter odyssey to find something, anything, to quell the lost despair of his languishing misplaced spirit ( in that setting, plus humour, plus trains) wins the day. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() PERCEVAL LE GALLOIS – 0 27 DOWN – 1 |

PERCEVAL LE GALLOIS – 0 27 DOWN – 1 Not as good as Charulata, but I think I'm finally getting Indian vibe, which was a very distant to me in Manoos and some other Ray films. |

Got to admit I thought 27 Down was kinda wonderful and I'm not looking forward to seeing a consciously artificial-looking medieval ballad, a kooky colourfest of cardboard and papier maché, unless it stars John Cleese and Michael Palin. Hope I surprise myself, though. |

PERCEVAL LE GALLOIS – 1 27 DOWN – 0 Perceval can be ponderous at times but is still exquisite in its own way. It's stylised to the point of looking like a segment on a children's TV show (and the use of third-person is a tad excessive in adding to the artifice), but it's engaging for those very qualities - airy and playful, high-brow and irreverent at the same time. The flashback narrative in 27 Down was more lucid than the Proustian fever dream it looked like it was going to succumb to at the start, which made it a more sensitive recollection of the protagonist's life than I was expecting, with flashes of poignancy coming through. However, it also meant that the rambling existential journey of the final act didn't evoke for me as much as it might have otherwise. |

PERCEVAL LE GALLOIS – 0 27 DOWN – 1 It wasn't just me that got a whiff of Monty Python from Perceval, then. That burlesque feel mostly surfaced during the bits where Perceval was misunderstanding the code of chivalry and doing all the wrong things for the right reasons... which I guess he outgrew as he developed more knightly polish. Ingenious and charming, but pretty-much irrelevant to anything I'm ordinarily interested in pursuing. My vote goes to 27 down; as artfully made and more 'relatable' to me. I wish the film had been more generous toward the coconut-oil woman; she was as unhappy as the other two, but the narrative framed her as the badguy gal in the triangle through no fault of her own, in a way that made Sanjay look a bit more like a self-pitying teenager. |

To please the majority is the requirement of the Planet Cinema. As far as I'm concerned, I don't make a concession to viewers, these victims of life, who think that a film is made only for their enjoyment, and who know nothing about their own existence. letterboxd * tumblr * website | |

My favorite part of a recent evening with John Smith was when a friend of mine asked him privately if his early films were inspired by Monty Python and Smith replied enthusiastically with "absolutely"!

PERCEVAL LE GALLOIS – 0 27 DOWN – 1 27 down is my favorite new discovery of the Cup. It features both one of the more touching love stories I've seen of late and insightful observations the pluses and minuses of living life on your own terms (or not.) Visually exciting and the train metaphor is well used. So glad the Cups allow us to discover films this good. I used to think my love of the films of Eric Rohmer knew no bounds. With Perceval, I have found those bounds. |
