One Way Passage is one of the first movies I really fell in love with, something like... jeeze... forty years ago. I'm very happy to have an excuse to watch it again.

That ending :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

It is tough to vote against The Year My Voice Broke. I was worried when I realized it would be a friendzone movie, a genre I typically don't care for, but it was handled very sensitively, and the relationship between the two main characters was genuinely sweet (unlike in something like Antoine et Colette.

I will talk breathlessly about Spanish and Portuguese cinema, João César Monteiro, Ritwik Ghatak, and Jacques Rivette, and hardly ever about anything else.

My favorite match of the cup so far! Two great films. The premise, acting, ending and even length of One Way Passage were wonderful. The Year My Voice Broke was on my watch list for a long time; I'm happy to have finally seen it. A very sincere movie that handles a lot of subjects (first love/sex, friendship, family, town gossip, bullies, pregnancy, death, and of course: being young/growing up) and manages to stay subtle enough on all these subjects.
It's a coin flip, so for the sake of the match:

the year my voice broke – 1
one way passage – 0

btw, the characters of The Year My Voice Broke were very Pretty In Pink. Danny is very Ducky.

I just want to tell an anecdote: I've got into The Year My Voice Broke without knowing anything about it. I watched it with my girlfriend a couple of years ago, and halfway through it I told her "This got to be based on a real story. You can't make up that sort of dialogue and characters' relations." I was not wrong. Allegedly it was John Duigan's personal experience he wrote down and put on film. A very sincere memory of the adolescent years.

The way characters talk and behave was just so natural like I never saw in any other film.

The Year My Voice Broke (A.K.A. Friend-Zone Blues) started off shaky for me, not seeming like anything remarkable in either form or content, not to mention the protagonist being presented as a socially awkward stalker. But the flip side to this is that his sexual maturity is simply reflected in the other characters, while his romantic competition isn't a straight-up source of jealousy either. These inner conflicts meant that the film had some tender insights into adolescence after all, and the distinctive cultural backdrop also came alive in the end, with emotional pain carried across generations. A humble film, but a touching one.

It's just unfortunate that it's up against One Way Passage, one of the most lovable films of the cup so far. A sparkling pre-Code romance where stock characters actually have some humanity behind them - but to be honest, the ending and those two cigarettes were enough to sweep me off my feet.

OWP is one of my fav films oat but i'm voting for TYMVB. i think it's a brave choice, less seen, from a country with a relatively unknown cinema... i think that earns a vote. for me, the best discovery of the tournament so far. thank you so much for sharing this movie

Being a closet Kay Francis lover, I didn't think a coming-of-age Aussie 80's film by John Duigan of all people was going to overpower One Way Passage, but it has done just than. Like them both just about equally, but I'm a sucker for young Noah Taylor and the well-developed screenplay by Duigan.

The Year My Voice Broke took forever to get rolling (and/or I didn't connect with it until I turned on the CC, because: Australian accents.) All that exposition, trotting out the tired cliches of raging horndog teenboy movies... once they moved past the stealing-girl's-underwear and the getting-dunked-in-toilets nonsense, it was fairly moving.

But One Way Passage is a glimpse of heaven itself.

The Year My Voice Broke had a coming of age story slightly better than a Harry Potter movie. The whole plot of history repeating itself in the case of the girl felt a bit cliched but it was a decent watch in the end. I liked the performance of the kid playing Danny.

One Way Passage - Neither Kay Francis looked terminally ill nor William Powell a murder convict. Frank McHugh pretty much carried this film on his shoulder's in my opinion.

I loved the work with natural light and the chosen locations in TYMVB. This "coming-of-age" approach was indeed a common place in many ways so I turned the volume off and left myself go with the images.
I enjoyed OWP but it was somehow uneven in regards to its construction of characters and tone of the story: there were some moments I just couldn't believe in their roles and words, especially those scenes with the policeman/detective.
