SEVEN WOMEN, SEVEN SINS – 0 DER FELSEN – 1 Many of the segments of Seven Women, Seven Sins were truly cringeworthy. I couldn't even really get into the Akerman. The only one I really liked was Maxi Cohen's "Anger" - but man, what a powerful short. I initially disliked the use of DV in Der Felsen but it gradually grew on me, since it fit the nightmarish mood. Not one of my favorite films of the cup or anything, but I certainly prefer it to Seven Women, Seven Sins. |

SEVEN WOMEN, SEVEN SINS – 0 DER FELSEN – 1 There is a short review of Seven Women, Seven Sins on Letterboxd by Brad Avery where he writes about each segment. And I must say, his experience mirrored mine. Like Mesnalty already mentioned, the Anger segment is definitely the best one, and I also liked Lust. But the rest unfortunately didn't do much for me, Akerman's was disappointing. I can't help but think of another anthology film, The Seven Deadly Sins from 1962, where directors like Godard, Chabrol, Demy and Vadim each made a short film about one of the seven sins. I would say both of these films have 2-3 interesting takes on the subject, but there are also some really lackluster efforts. I also had the same feeling as Mesnalty as I began watching Der Felsen, initially disliking the use of DV, the sudden fade outs and really the whole editing style. But as the movie got into its rhythm and Katrin and Malte meet, I got interested in both of the characters and what would happen to them. And by that time, what had been bothering me about the style of the film, now felt appropriate to build the tension. I ended up really enjoying this one

seven women, seven sins – 0 der felsen – 1 i hope bearded women advance(s) to the next round, because i'm interested to see where it goes from here, but this one is... not a good movie. agree with the comments about der felsen. handheld, shaky stuff is not my thing, but i ended up liking it more than i thought i would from the get-go. |

Oh no, rischka! I was counting on your vote! The Eustache is gonna win anyway (and it's also a deeply mysogynist film), so give love a chance.

It seems like we all had similar experiences with these two films. "Anger" was indeed the best part of Seven Women, Seven Sins, precisely because it was the most genuine and the least indulgent and condascending towards its subject and characters. I appreciated the variety with each segment, but even then, the project as a whole was only barely watchable. I usually don't mind DV but in Der Felsen, the ugliness of the visuals only seemed to accentuate the ugliness of the characters and undercut any moments of sensuality. But there were stretches in the second half where the editing did bring some urgency to the story (as in a whirlwind affair) and establish a distinctive rhythm and language. Thematically, it's probably the film that lives up to WBA's genre the most too. SEVEN WOMEN, SEVEN SINS – 0 DER FELSEN – 1 Edited by DT., Jul 4 2015, 07:21 AM.

Seems like this will be by far the lowest attended match-up so far (and then hopefully at least remaining the lowest for the rest of the cup). Too bad. PS: Why did so many of you have to watch my initial Japanese entry instead of Der Felsen? Why god, why? I guess I should've known it, and next time I may time the most controversial of my selections as the third (or at least when the weather is great... ) instead of opening with it. But then I would have had to go for a completely different dramaturgy and maybe other films as well? I guess we'll never find out. At least I hope there won't be two or three useless further votes for my film, and we end up both out of the cup as a result, Jirin. EDIT: Oh no, the other match has also a measly 5 participants so far...

Yeah WBA, especially as it sounds like you're finally running a movie that might not be terrible. Sadly I'm still with the family (in Ohio, which is like West Virginia) for the next few days, so won't be able to see any of these movies, excepting already-seen SIBERIADE. Oughta have time for a couple of the next batch in the ol' Group-o'-Death when I can bask in glorious Far Eastern solitude again.

SEVEN WOMEN, SEVEN SINS– 0 [/b]DER FELSEN – 1[/b] Seven Women was just frivolous... a few of the directors made a strong enough impression that I'm going to look further into their catalogues, but it's clear they're all saving their best work for their own projects. I didn't think I was going to like a German movie about sex tourism, but it turned out not to be that, and I ended up liking it a great deal. Oh, hell, let me just be lazy and cut/paste my text from letterboxd.

My favorite of the three is probably PERFECT , but yes, this one's most definitely the film I thought was most easily 'digestible' and most 'fitting' for the current crowd here - though I would have expected more enthusiastic responses (and at least one or two raves) from a few voters. But I guess this might have been made difficult by Graf's decision to shoot a generic story with avantgarde aesthetics (of course that's very reductive of the film, but I'm speaking broadly here). But in the end I was able to introduce three rather unknown and untypical films regarding my impressions of our SCFZ community so far, so I guess I achieved some of my goals during the cup. The rest of the films would have been I think somewhat easier and safer choices, though no less exciting. Edited by wba, Jul 6 2015, 06:15 PM.
