DESTINY – 1 NEWS FROM HOME – 0 Ackerman's had great atmosphere. Those letters from an absent character to an invisible fish-out-of-water character, recounting the humdrum daily life of faraway family members, juxtaposed with street scenes, gave it an otherwordly feel that I loved, but I have to go with Destiny, because I'll almost always tilt in favour of more conventional narratives. Ackerman is really hypnotic, though, and I want to explore more of her work. So far, I find her stuff reminiscent of Agnes Varda's, which I've liked a lot. But my sample size from both directors is still too small at this stage for me to be able to confidently say so. |

DESTINY – 1 NEWS FROM HOME – 0 Akerman is really hit or miss for me - I love La Chambre, Jeanne Dielman and Je Tu Il Elle but I often just can't get on her wavelength, and News from Home is one of those cases. I can appreciate what she's doing here, but it's not for me. This is my first Zeki, even after all the praise he's gotten around these parts, and I was very glad to be introduced. |

DESTINY – 0 NEWS FROM HOME – 1 I prefer the concept of News from Home to Destiny which becomes tiring to watch after a point. Maybe I need to give another try to both these films in the future. |

destiny – 1 news from home – 0 destiny isn't the type of film i usually enjoy. lots of screaming and anger and what not isn't fun for me. but at least it was shot well. i could see lots of directors wanting a more kechiche-like aesthetic for the subject matter. my first zeki was a decent enough experience. |
| I will talk breathlessly about Spanish and Portuguese cinema, João César Monteiro, Ritwik Ghatak, and Jacques Rivette, and hardly ever about anything else. | |

The sexual tension in Destiny was stifling from the start, with all its masculinity, jealousy, lust and obsession. And in the second half, I found it easy to sympathise with the protagonist's despair, laid bare for all to see but sensitive enough not to lapse into melodrama. The efficiency of the writing and visual storytelling along with the acting made this an emotionally sturdy film. News from Home presented a very unique sort of travelogue, being authentic in the side of New York it captured and with a thoughtful marriage of image and dialogue evoking diaspora and loss; a simple but surprisingly moving set-up. But I perhaps enjoyed the concept more than the final execution. DESTINY – 1 NEWS FROM HOME – 0 |

My only exposure to Chantal Akerman was a viewing of JE TU IL ELLE on grainy VHS in my formative filmwatching years, round the age of 19, when I'd grab anything subtitled I could find. Though I now recall nothing about it other than a round of lesbian wrestling to break the tedium, it was quite instructive, because it was the first time I realized that the so-called Art film has its own set of cliches, very different from but ultimately just as insipid, as the standard Hollywood romance or action movie. And though I haven't seen it, my idea of cinematic agony is sitting through the four-hour film where the Belgian housewife cuts carrots and washes dishes until she kills someone at the end. I'd prefer back-to-back viewings of TITANIC. NEWS FROM HOME is what I expected it to be - mildly interesting idea for a 30-40 minute student film flogged out to a soporific 90 minutes, the same tone from start to finish. Never did Akerman threaten to do anything unexpected or pulse-quickening. I'm a bright hopeful lad, so I at times watch this sort of thing all the way to the end, waiting and waiting, though I know it shall be in vain, for a second idea to swerve the monotony onto some new path. But Akerman's a resolutely one-idea gal. On the other hand the most interesting thing about the movie with the two Turkish nullities and their "love" problems was watching the progress of the lead male character's facial hair. I can see how someone who thinks WE WON'T GROW OLD TOGETHER is a masterpiece would like this thing, but I was right bored with every lousy loser in this movie by the half hour mark. I would also question whether this counts as "Women Slumming with Bad Boys," as "slumming" presumes some kind of height. Both pretty bad movies, though DESTINY wins by a hair. And besides, I'm more interested to see how Women Slumming goes from here than Bechdel Test, a term I was blissfully unaware of until a few months ago and is one of the silliest damn things I've ever heard. DESTINY – 1 NEWS FROM HOME – 0 I feel comfortable not to speak to a stranger in a subway, or bother him with the problems of my own (and vice versa). I also feel more comfortable while walking the sidewalk rather than across the motorway. If that makes me an alienating and cold person, I'm ok with that. One should appreciate the experiment, though. The last third of News from Home was waaaay better than first hour. Edited by Mario Gaborovic, Jul 12 2015, 12:14 PM.

Bechdel Test isn't intended to be a fully-developed critical apparatus for evaluating movies with, it's possible Karl is misunderstanding the context. More of a rule-of-thumb, snap-judgement way of filtering feminist-content/absence-of-same. |

well it's actually "intended" to be a panel in a graphic novel, but... i don't think it's at all useful wrt any particular flick. i think it's most useful when used, often in addition to the reverse bechdel, to look at a body of work (of a filmmaker, an industry, a festival, whatever) "Filmmaker X has made 12 films; none pass the bechdel but all pass the reverse bechdel" ^shit like that matters. shit like that is meaningful. shit like that should be expressed and shared and considered, and the bechdel test allows us to do that |

DESTINY – 0 NEWS FROM HOME – 1 Destiny was good; characterization (at least the main guy there) was detailed and subtle, and there were a couple of images that dramatized his miseries really beautifully. But News From Home was a knockout. |
