THEATRE OF BLOOD – 0 WHISPER OF THE HEART – 1 k i'm not the biggest fan of whisper of the heart but it has a talking cat, need i say more (i actually prefer the sequel, the cat returns). i am a fan of vincent price but he was in full on parody mode here and what was fun at first soon become too ridiculous for me Edited by rischka, Jul 14 2015, 02:22 AM.

theatre of blood – 1 whisper of the heart - 0 i enjoyed whisper of the heart quite a bit more than the other animated films from the genre. the focus on books probably helped. (cats are overrated, though.) theatre of blood was admittedly a goofy premise, but it held my interest and ended up being pretty enjoyable. and i'm always up for more shakespeare-related films. animations, not so much. |

Whisper of the Heart - 1 Theatre of Blood - 0 I really don't care for the ending of Whisper of the Heart, or John Denver, but I also quickly grew tired of Theatre of Blood's shtick. Edited by john ryan, Jul 16 2015, 01:40 AM.

THEATRE OF BLOOD – 1 WHISPER OF THE HEART – 0 I'm afraid I couldn't find much of interest in the adolescent mundanity of Whisper of the Heart, which felt like Miyazaki-lite. And while most everything about Theatre of Blood was over the top, it nicely fit the premise. |

patriarchy at its worst you guys ever notice how, in the eyes of the patriarchal populace, cats=women and dogs=men? it's totally socially acceptable to hate cats/women, but god forbid someone hate dogs/men if a man hates dogs/men? fucking faggot. are you even a real man?? if a woman hates dogs/men? ugh, she's a bitch anyway if a man hates cats/women? hate is maybe extreme, but fair enough. it's a bit weird for men to like cats if a woman hates cats/women? oh she's bad ass. not like other chicks. pb goes 4x4ing cats are also far more sexualised than dogs. you never see someone dressed up as a "sexy dog" for halloween. while cats are judged by their appearance, dogs are judged by their loyalty, their trustworthiness, their personality not to mention the fact that cats are seen as bitchy and self-involved, despite the fact that DOGS NEED TO BE WALKED TWICE A DAY. cats need literally nothing. ever had a cat go missing for a couple days and come back fine? yeah, b/c it killed a bird or rodent and ate it and was fine and didn't need you. that's another thing, the fact that cats (read: women) DON'T NEED YOU and realise that THEY DON'T NEED YOU is cited as bitchiness. absurd! you can always spot a misogynist by one's irrational hatred of cats "nothing against girls when they're young, but men are much better than women." -- brian davisson Edited by bure420, Jul 16 2015, 09:58 PM.

hey hey that's a little extreme. dogs are more 'useful' than cats. esp if one is a shepherd![]() granted many men like dogs because they are obedient whereas cats simply ignore you and do what they want. but i like dogs too sry brian (who never said he 'hated' cats)

GREAT movie!! i was thinking the other day, what would be a good 3 movies if someone had picked "cats around the globe" as their genre, and i settled on take care of my cat (south korea), the cassandra cat (czech republic), and the private life of a cat (usa). maybe if i'd done this i wouldn't have finished last in my group -__- |

To please the majority is the requirement of the Planet Cinema. As far as I'm concerned, I don't make a concession to viewers, these victims of life, who think that a film is made only for their enjoyment, and who know nothing about their own existence. letterboxd * tumblr * website | |

sorry for derailing this thread. Personally I don't care about dogs, cause I generally don't like animals which do what you want them to do. (I really hate that in people too, btw. but animals who are like this seem even more pathetic). And I love that cats do their own thing, most of the time. Comparing cats to 'women' and dogs to 'men' is simply idotic, cause there are as many male cats and female dogs as in most mammal populations.

Sorry to contribute further to a derail, but dk's post was hardly dumb. There's even a book about it: Why Men Are Like Dogs and Women Are Like Cats I found his post interesting, because I hadn't thought about it before, but you only need to think about the canine and feline slang used in patriarchal society to describe women to see that dk has a point. Cat words are almost always used to describe someone desirable (kitty, pussycat, etc), and dog words almost always for someone undesirable (bitch, dog, etc). There were two exceptions I could think of though - 'catty' and 'minx' don't really fit (I just learned that the word 'minx' comes from an old word meaning 'pet dog'). Maybe all this stuff belongs in its own thread. |

I remember Theatre of Blood being like a variety show lineup of Shakespearean death scenes - a self-reflexive, tongue-in-cheek tribute to the Bard with an entertaining all-star cast. A lot of fun, I regret not seeing it again before this match. But I decided not to bother as Whisper of the Heart is one of my favourite Ghiblis. A hopelessly romantic story with sweeping animation that would've ably succeeded Miyazaki, Kondo's only film for the studio showed his potential with a beautifully realised coming-of-age narrative that captures adolescence in a heartfelt way. Sad to see anime not get much support here, but I guess I'm just a softie for these things. THEATRE OF BLOOD – 0 WHISPER OF THE HEART – 1 |

Disliked each one about the same. Theater of Blood did hire many wonderful actors to strut about in heavy make-up earning a paycheck, which is worth something I suppose--not unlike those Agatha Christie films which are dusted-off periodically and feature film royalty in period costume mouthing regrettable lines. TOB also gave us a wonderful Robert Morley turn vying with the great Vincent for over-the-top bragging rights. Sorry, but the animated feature isn't something I can even judge. I was never that youthful, didn't even like the character art. But perhaps I watch too much porn in which 10 foot tall CG monsters with glistening steroid-engorged tentacles become engaged to naked 6 inch tall pixies. Oh noooooooooooooooo! Which takes us back to dogs and cats I suppose. I did notice IMDB rated it 8.0 with nearly 25,000 voters. Shows what I know. THEATRE OF BLOOD – 1 WHISPER OF THE HEART – 0 Edited by Brotherdeacon, Jul 19 2015, 12:15 AM.

I'm glad this is a Genre Cup and we are watching films from that perspective (including narrative codes, structure patterns, references and hints to those stories that have been told several times with just a few variations each time). That's why I enjoyed this match a lot: Theatre of Blood and its references to Shakespeare works and their quintessential moments of intensity and Whisper of the Heart and its many common places and twists within the tradition of the immortal love story. For those who write and reflect on how stories are told, this cup is a gold mine. THEATRE OF BLOOD – 0 WHISPER OF THE HEART – 1 |
