i love both of these. but only susan taslimi can force me to overcome my latent affinity for the patriarchy.
I will talk breathlessly about Spanish and Portuguese cinema, João César Monteiro, Ritwik Ghatak, and Jacques Rivette, and hardly ever about anything else.

i'm wishing there was an english translation of his plays. it looks like he's written over 50 (and his daughter is also a playwrite).

from beizai's website

Quote:

It is in a patriarchal society that the lack of presence of a man in the leading role invokes critical attention ... the greatest disaster of patriarchy, where grownups decide for children and men for women and the government for the real people and the intellectual for the imaginary ones, is that it is the women and children who suffer the consequences of the men’s decisions. The victims of patriarchal self-centeredness are not only the women and children, but also many a man. These people are my subjects. Against a masculine tyranny, the children build up a hatred that will make them the martyrs or the tyrants of the future. The women, on the other hand, have their internal defense mechanism and a subtle wisdom that balances them against the violence of the world.

one wonders how he's managed to stay out of prison. i remember his film travellers was featured in another cup and i missed it, despite rohit's urging me to watch it and i regret that now. according to kg i downloaded it but i no longer have it :(

anyone have a link?

It's on SMz as well. But if anyone's really keen I can put it up on yr only-lasts-a-week site. No one took my offer to do the same for Beizai's KILLING MAD DOGS for the 2001 poll, but I reckon that still stands. Unless the uploading's so slow it takes me 10 hours to put one up...

any dead or alive "top rank" patriarchal figure is not worth a dime... all pathos in such a case is misdirected... it’s a pure DAD-a... if amazon queen would get murdered and jury be more gender ballanced, the film could be taken seriously

"cremator" has at least noteworthy settings... it takes place in the crematorium or the church of death designed in rondo-cubist style by architect Pavel Janák

Posted Image

after Picasso and Brague initiated their painting co-op, the inhabitants of czech lands became so obsessed with cubist iconography that they started to design crystalic-shaped buildings, furniture, chandeliers, street lamps, table clocks, boxes to store sugar cubes etc etc etc.

Pavel Janák was not even ashamed to restore a historical building (baroque) by adding to it a cubist topping

after ww1 independent czechoslovakia was founded and a new eccentric "national" style called rondo-cubism emerged... crystalic shapes of cubo-expressionism were replaced by circles, half-circles and quater-cirles inspired by ornamentation of local folkart... soon rondo-cubism reached full bloom as previously edgy-cubism did

thus in 1921-1923 crematorium in the city of Pardubice has got its rounded shapes and later local macabre filmmaking its fitting settings

See, ordinarily I wouldn't do this but, seeing as how this is my match and your vote, Flakotaso, which is all of your third post on the forum, is against my film, I will ask you to at least give a reason for it, even if it's some headscratching reference to its lack of rondo-cubist architecture accompanied by several pictures of said architecture. Because I think you may be Bewitched Reel in disguise, argh!

THE CREMATOR – 1
DEATH OF YAZDGERD – 0

The Cremator is without a doubt one of the highlights from the first three rounds for me, Rudolf Hrušínský's performance was both strangely comic and terrifying at the same time. Watching the film, with its dizzying camera movement and surreal atmosphere, is like being stuck in a nightmare that only keeps getting worse and worse. That final image of Kopfrkingl driving away from his "Temple of Death"...unforgettable! Thanks for those pictures jirinvk and remember, for those planning a trip to The Czech Republic, be sure to visit the places where the film was shot ;)

Death of Yazdgerd had me worried for a while, as I was having a hard time connecting with the film. But when the miller and his wife started to recount what had happened to the king, and their stories began to change along with the roles they were playing, I became as interested as those soldiers in finding out what had really happened. The theatricality of the performances felt fitting for the style of the film, and there were some lovely moments between the actors as the tension grew and grew. A classic example of what the cup can do for us, introduce films that you have very little chance of discovering yourself! A nice way to end the group stage :toast:

The nightmarish visuals of The Cremator were something to behold, even if the subject matter was too clinical for me to really connect with. But I had trouble connecting to Death of Yazdgerd from the start, it just wasn't doing it for me. That said, I'm still grateful for discoveries which I can return to down the track and maybe have a better crack at then.

For now though:

The Cremator was like the rise of Nazism via one death obsessed man. Some of those scene transitions were sublime - that's probably what I like most about the film. It's also interesting as a film about the Nazis' totalitarianism but really being about Soviet communist totalitarianism.

The Cremator seemed a clear winner half an hour into Death of Yazdgerd, but I was completely won over by it. Very theatrical but fascinating and captivating. Like The Cremator it's a film about the political past aimed at the political present. It is a shame about the quality of the video after seeing the stills in the other thread. I'd love to see a good print of it.

Well I'd be up by one if Bewitched Reel - I mean, er, Flakotaso - hadn't voted for his/her own film. I guess some folk just got no concept of ordinary decent sportsmanship. I wonder how Kalfosato and Falkasot are gonna vote.

I'm just sayin it looks suspect is all. I recognize everyone else who's voted in the thread here except the person who according to the register only has three ever posts on the forum (the third and last a few days ago now, to vote here), doesn't elucidate the reason for her/his vote (nor does Mario, but I know Mario), and doesn't respond when I egg him/her on by insinuating that he/she is really the long-absent manager of CREMATOR with false beard and nose.

Their IP addresses are different indeed. It is really difficult to tell if Flakotaso is a new user or an impersonator. So if s/he is actually a new user, then we expect to see more participation and votes from this user in the upcoming rounds.

THE CREMATOR – 0
DEATH OF YAZDGERD – 1

Difficult to find two more powerful and intelligent dramatic films in a single Cup match (or does someone always say that?). Death of Yazdgerd had little of the imaginative cinematic flourishes and Bunuel-like originality of Juraj Herz's The Cremator, but it's numerous strength's came as a total surprise. A wonderful whirlpool of literary-styled story-telling which incorporated history, culture, a look at the possible origins of certain myths, political resonance, ethics, law, the ignorance of law, those who suffer at the bottom of any hierarchy, and an almost effortless excellence in the play/screenplay's dramatic art. Throw in some very confident acting amid Spartan staging and voila! It gets my vote. Probably not since watching Manoel de Oliveira's The Satin Slipper in a previous Cup have I been so enthralled by the multifaceted inquiries of a film into the depths of personal, social and historic lore. An almost Biblical stress on quicksilver knowledge while highlighting the diversity within intention and truth.

Tough decision in quite stimulating duel of dramas regarding DEATH. I never expected Death of Yazdgerd to be that intense: not a waisted second in this pathos-after-pathos-chain-reaction clash of roles.
While I was amazed by The Cremator's playful game with gazes looking at opposite directions to connect totally different scenes, the permanent movement and choreographies inside the shots in DOY define my vote tonight.
