I really enjoyed the visual storytelling of For Those in Peril, it helped to provide a sensitive look into the headpsace of someone dealing with survivor’s guilt, loss and mental illness, immersing you into his mindset (kinda like what Lynne Ramsay does, only less glossy). It also kept things varied and prevented the film from becoming too derivative a work of kitchen sink realism. But On Borrowed Time was just plain charming in the cosiest way. Yes it’s quaint and old-fashioned, but it cast its spell over me. Sometimes, you’re just in the mood for a little treacle. FOR THOSE IN PERIL – 1 ON BORROWED TIME – 0 For Those in Peril is a really, really impressive debut. The Take Shelter-esque ending is kind of a cheap trick, although I tend to be a sucker for that sort of thing. What Rischka said about On Borrowed Time. |

I added some subs! They're not perfect - the subtitler didn't understand every word either - but should help. |

When I was watching FTIP, I plugged in a set of english subs I found on opensubs. Made a huge difference; I couldn't hear/understand more than 20% of the dialogue before I captioned-up.

I've managed to understand 70% without subs. As I said before, I have no access to the blog for no reason discovered, yet I was trying with multiple accounts. Whenever I watch a Canadian film, I understand everything.

What about a Newfie Canadian movie! Especially small-town Newfoundland (a bit redundant I admit), they're practically Irish-level unintelligible gibber... For Those in Peril - 0 On Borrowed Time - 1 FTIP: everything i can see on the internet about this seems to be calling it exclusively a tale about grief and suffering and trauma - the descent of the protag into these things, and into "borderline mental illness" - and this makes absolutely no sense. is it not just clear-cut schizophrenia? pretty much every scene in which he interacts with another character, and especially in the pre-tragedy flashbacks/footage, seems to show this. unless all the flashbacks/footage are just fictitious delusions because he's now deranged... so it seems like another schizophrenia movie to me. most of them are more or less the same. they're uncomfortable and you're not sure if what is happening is real or not. not sure if that makes for a good movie. this wasn't bad though, despite consisting mostly of unintelligible scottish gibber so you even further don't know what's going on. Spoiler: click to toggle 2.5/5 OBT: loved it for most all of it - very charming cranky old man /w heart of gold and poor little orphan boy struggling to make the best of things sort of movie. lots of good haranguing and shit. BUT QUALMS: - would a savvy old fart like that have been so perfectly blind as to what other people's perceptions of his belief in Mr. Brink would be? Not even a "no one would believe me"? (later in the movie he even admits that he would have judged the doctor if he had believed him! yet earlier he's like "why wouldn't you believe me?" hmph!!! this is a big plot device gaffe for me - Spoiler: click to toggle - small qualm: pud talks WAY too loudly. every time he speaks, especially in the last 30 minutes, he literally yells out every single line. my ears are on borrowed time during this movie 2.5/5 so both were alright. i'm not overly thrilled with either. but i'll forget absolutely everything about FTIP within a couple months and still remember some of the iconic aspects of OBT for at least six months so i'll give it the slight edge |

With his blank-affect, traumatized vacantness throughout the beginning of the movie, I was fed up to *here* with Mr. Misery Goat, and I didn't think anything was going to happen to change that. "Find me fascinating even though I'm inarticulate and empty" seemed like an abuse of male privilege. But then I turned the subtitles on AND the narrative opened out into less self-indulgent territories. On Borrowed Time didn't work for me, for the most part; very intermittently did the relentlessly manipulative LOVE US BECAUSE WE'RE LOVABLE posturing have the desired effect... but only for seconds at a time, and I hated myself afterwards. |

FOR THOSE IN PERIL – 1 ON BORROWED TIME – 0 It was a delightful match between two adapted fairy tales. For Those in Peril offered more layers of complexity and visual richness even when it seemed uninteresting during the first thirty minutes. At some point, characters re-gained some attention through physical contact and yelling as drama devices and it worked. On the other hand, On Borrowed Time was schematic and predictable in regards to its correspondence to the old story about the captive Death, known in many cultures taking only the necessary from the characters without taking any risk. |
