SINGLE ELIMINATION - FOURTH ROUND

Match 042

On this thread voting will be on

F1 Vs E2

DAYS AND NIGHTS IN THE FOREST (Karl)
Why Has Bodhi-Dharma Left for the East? (Bae Yong-kyun, 1989)

Vs

STEPS TO PECULIARITY (Mischa)
Of Gods and the Undead (Os deuses e os mortos, Brazil, 1970) Ruy Guerra

Participants will have seven days to issue their votes. Therefore, this match will end on Monday August 31st at 9:00 pm (GMT -5, Bogotá, Lima *If you are not sure about time please check my local time going to my profile information

After the voting period is over, the votes will be counted and the results published.

Each user can vote on any match as long as s/he has watched both films paired against each other. Please cast your vote using the titles of both films in the following manner:

WHY HAS BODHI-DHARMA LEFT FOR THE EAST? – 1 or 0
OF GODS AND THE UNDEAD – 0 or 1

And kindly BOLD your selection, if possible.

Managers are not allowed to vote on matches their own directors participate in, so Karl — manager for Why Has Bodhi-Dharma Left for the East? and Mischa– manager for Of Gods and the Undead, cannot vote in this match.

REMEMBER: This is a single-elimination round, so only winners will pass to next round.
In case of ties the winners would be defined by previous history of "total votes" (votes-for minus votes-against), so we will always have into account the number of votes from previous rounds.

If you have yet to see either film and still don’t have access to them, please send me a pm so I can assist you locating the the films to view.

VOTERS ARE REQUESTED TO POST THEIR THOUGHTS ON THE COMPETING FILMS ALONG WITH THEIR VOTE. THANK YOU.

Why Has Bodhi-Dharma Left for the East? is just impossibly beautiful. Can't vote against it. Has anybody here seen Bae's other, much less heralded film?

i doubt you could find two films more opposite than these two: impossibly beautiful contemplative buddhist film and bloody surrealist brazilian acid western. i'm gonna have to meditate on this one

it's a shame guerra's film seems kind of faded. love the nascimento soundtrack though

Posted Image

so there's this iguana looking dude who takes himself far too seriously...

Posted Image

stop me if you think you've heard this one before. ok i'll go with karl's film even though i'm not in love with it either. it's really almost TOO beautiful

recently seeing im kwon-taek's mandala (which i loved) probably didn't help but i kept wondering when antonio das mortes was gonna show up in guerra's film

Posted Image

final scene of rocha's antonio das mortes (1969)

Posted Image

first scene of guerra's os deuses e os mortos (1970)

Good points Rischka. Lots of similarities between Antonio das Mortes and Os Deuses e os mortos. Seems everyone in Bahia needs to moisturize more often. Cool gif in So Korea. :D

i don't see how that shot could be other than intentional. i clearly remembered the ending of rocha's film because it's something of a shock, since the whole story has a mythic quality like it occurs in some historical period...and then he walks out into what is clearly the present day. ironic that guerra would make this point of obvious comparison cuz for me guerra (having seen a mere 2 films from each) will always be in rocha's shadow. i'd love to hear filipe's thoughts about this...

I will talk breathlessly about Spanish and Portuguese cinema, João César Monteiro, Ritwik Ghatak, and Jacques Rivette, and hardly ever about anything else.

Is Ruy Guerra totally successful in his perceived intentions with Of Gods and the Undead? No, he misses often. However his attempts at creating a Shakespearean (almost solely literary) Anti-Anti hero is politically and philosophically of great interest to me. There are no winners, none. Even the Importing countries and their sphere of power and wealth must live in a disembodied soullessness. We've even broken free of idealist Marxism as well as the trappings of myth and metaphysical power(with which Glauber Rocha's pageantry is so visually enamored). No-one believes ancestors had better lives, and even the pantheistic eruptions of cruel sacrifice to the natural world seem merely leftover palimpsests from a language of nonsense barely visible and altogether of little interest. At the end, men and patriarchy have been killed off and the women who remain to face an unsure future seem to be inbred vestiginal mutes or serious maniacs. Not even gender disassociation (and/or change) offer humanity hope against the greed and violence of an endless string of retribution. Ruy Guerra is apocalyptic without a Hollywood hero or glowing animation characters to save it. We are only offered an archaeology of grim primordial realism with which to build anew or perish.

As for Bae Yong-kyun and his idylls in nature, I enjoy this attempt as well. However I like my religion with machetes, AK 47's and temptations inextricably mixed with the mindfulness of present tense, not merely an avoidable notion through ennui and meditation. I do like "Why Has Bodhi-Dharma Left for the East," but in contrast to the Brazilian puss of mankind's serious infection, I'm partial to the fatal disease with a stake through its heart rather than a long fade to the spiritual possibilities of rejuvenation. At least at the moment.

Somehow I knew I'd lose to the grainy violent Brazilian film. Well, SCFZ... what can ya do?

Nah, the other night I rolled me a smoke and poured a Pernod and went outside and stood beneath the tropics sky and beyond the jagged silhouettes of the palm were the stars, and the stars said the Brazilian film will win, and I said Well, that's all right too. Fair enough. I'm tired of this game anyway, and it saves me the trouble of having to pick out what to run next.

Polar opposites indeed, but it was the rough, urgent filmmaking in Of Gods and the Undead that felt more vital to me.

There's a lot I could say about OGATU, but I have to do some more thinking first. As for Antonio Das Mortes, though... That shot serves the same function here as I imagine it must in ADM, except backwards -- it shows a character grounded in recognizable historic-present-time and then allows him to vanish into a mythic eternal-now that looks like 1910-20 but could be any time within the centuries that this cycle of capitalism has operated. Shell Oil is the same multinational oppressor as the cacao conglomerates that triggered the conflicts in the movie.

yeah i got that, i only meant it was unfortunate that it put me in mind of the earlier film since i find guerra's hand so much heavier. not his fault of course

it's on my youtube channel if you want to watch it :D

i will send you a link!! it's a sequel to black god white devil but that doesn't matter so much. othon bastos (the lizard man) is in both of these too

i wanted to like this one more than i did and i suspect that is the reason. also a nice clean copy would be good but i guess such thing doesn't exist :-/

Oh, goody. I'm hot-n-cold on Rocha -- loved one, hated one. We'll see about ADM... one of these days. Guerra seems to bring a lot of literary practices to the table, rather than creating his meanings through specifically filmic strategies. (Example: the names of the characters...) Could complicate peoples' reception of it.
