Glad you liked the film Rischka. I haven't seen many Soviet war films from this period, but the ones I have seen (The Cranes Are Flying, Ballad of a Soldier, Ivan's Childhood and this one) have all been amazing :)

I will talk breathlessly about Spanish and Portuguese cinema, João César Monteiro, Ritwik Ghatak, and Jacques Rivette, and hardly ever about anything else.

I consider both films triumphs. The one I'm not voting for is on my list of favorites. At the end of my interior discussion between the two dramas, it's a matter of scope--different definitions of scope I'd say. But I find Valerio Zurlini's camera able to bore into each character and each situation to expose the living consciousness below the physical in a gesture, a look, the eyes, a kiss on the cheek, a turning away toward a wall. I can't say who knows more about human nature among these two directors, it shouldn't matter; but Girl with a Suitcase describes what I also know (or believe) about romance, class, money, patriarchy, sex, abuse, and being in the presence of bewildering desire with its momentary heights of an elusive becoming more than the sum of what we've previously thought possible; as well as the bad choices which seemed to inextricably follow from our fear and pride. An emotional withering we'll never resuscitate no matter our age or even our gender. But I'm not doing service here. Thanks for both entries, they're superior films in my book.

Both really solid films in their respective genres, having familiar narratives but being well made in all respects (and featuring radiant women to boot). But I'll give my vote to the stirring tale of Destiny of a Man over the innocent charm of Girl with a Suitcase.

FATE OF A MAN – 1
GIRL WITH A SUITCASE – 0

Both great films but while Fate of a Man doesn't particularly stand out to me among Soviet war films (though it's not its fault that there are so many great Soviet war films), Girl with a Suitcase does stand out from other films in its genre due to its psychological subtlety.

watched things barely too late again.......... and in this case it actually would've made a difference. sorry gylfi!!

saw girl with a suitcase years ago in theatre and i remember it being a pretty average-decent flick, nothing very memorable about it except for claudia being a babe, but good.

but watched fate of a man tonight and it was spectacular!!

the story is a little lacking in variety, yes, but it's about the idea: the protag's life being a big cruel joke, and his struggling repeatedly to get back on his feet, each time his world gets figuratively or literally shelled, only to have it happen over and over. finally he is so pathetic and desperately looking to find anything to attach himself to, to have a reason to live again, that he lies to an equally pathetic orphan about being his long-lost father, and they stumble on under this absurd but extremely touching pretense. and it ends with reciting some saccharine, hollow jingoism about the indomitable soul of the russians or whatever, after completely taking apart the whole meaning of patriotism and war in the previous 90 minutes. once again, everyone keeps lying to him just to persuade him to carry on and sacrifice himself over and over... christ! this movie just got better and better as it kept going, 4.5/5

so i belatedly and too-latedly vote overwhelmingly in favour of fate of a man :candle: :candle: :candle:
