THE LIGHT AT THE EDGE OF THE WORLD – 1 ALMS FOR A BLIND HORSE – 0 The Light at the Edge of the World features breathtaking panoramas. Everything else was very watchable, and a cut above the usual stock films from this period and genre. The perfect kind of movie for a weekend matinee, and I don't mean that in a totally disparaging way. The cinematography in Alms for a Blind Horse was also beautiful, providing a cold yet intimate look into its community, though the detached style did limit the power of its themes. Still, all visually rich selections this round. It also brought to mind a certain film from last year's cup, which is never a bad thing: ![]() ![]()

THE LIGHT AT THE EDGE OF THE WORLD - 0 ALMS FOR A BLIND HORSE – 1 Neither film engaged me much as a narrative - one was superficial adventureering and the other hardly even *had* a narrative - but the visual field was a bit richer in Blind Horse, and I had more pleasure from "looking at the pictures" in that one. Bit of a coin-toss, though; I think peoples' pref.s will probably be based only on the kinds of cinema they already prefer. |

THE LIGHT AT THE EDGE OF THE WORLD – 0 ALMS FOR A BLIND HORSE – 1 The Light at the End of the World exulted a bit too much in the depravity of the pirates for my taste, though admittedly it carried through on its nihilism, which is admirable. I'm not sure I can say anything intelligent about Alms for a Blind Horse, but the move to Akermanian tracking shots in the middle was pretty gutsy. |

^ Yeah, I noticed that; they served a specific purpose at first, showing the breadth of activity of different kinds in misc. locations... and then it started seeming as though he was just throwing in another tracking shot whenever he needed to change things up a little bit. |

THE LIGHT AT THE EDGE OF THE WORLD – 0 ALMS FOR A BLIND HORSE – 1 Alms for a Blind Horse was not a very consistent film, but I appreciated its montage and the succession of non-predictable shots ironically for a more-or-less predictable situation. That is the inconsistence imo. However, I still felt I needed to see if at the end there was going to be an alternative solution to the social issues. The Light at the Edge of the World was delightful to watch, but to be fair, it needed something. I think it is one of the films with the highest amount of dummies thrown from high places. It surprised me again that the female character is kept as a sexual slave and somehow "iguana-ized" once again, without any other choice. I'm not being moralistic here, but there should be more imagination in regards to this captivity common place. Maybe in future films, thanks to genre studies we will get to watch films with creative twists on these tropes. Edited by javierquintero, Oct 26 2015, 04:53 PM.

everyone needs to thank javier for swaying the vote. i was between an eddie constantine noir thriller (john berry's give 'em hell) or a thanksgiving-inspired giallo-type film (jim o'connolley's tower of evil), and i don't even like noir or giallo that much. rest assured, tuggingonmustaches will show something much better than anything i had left for the final. in case anyone's interested, the two i was considering but couldn't show, for lack of subtitles, were the sea and the days (vogel and kaminker) and my wife and the dog (said marzouk), considered one of the best egyptian films ever. i'm still interested in seeing the marzouk, so if anyone speaks arabic and wants to make subtitles, pleasepleasepleasepleaseplease!
