Who's Singin' Over There? didn't quite live up to my expectations - a lot of the humor felt pretty banal, though maybe there was nuance I missed out on.

Who's Singin' Over There? comes from a reliably charming regional cinema, made all the more offbeat by journeying through a war-torn landscape - neatly setting the stage for a bleakly comic road trip from hell.

Jai Bhim Comrade was compelling from the start, and even though it runs out of steam in the second half as it hammers its point home, its politics are still powerful, its musical storytelling beautiful and it's thoroughly informative to an outsider. I could happily vote for either of these films, but I'll give my vote to the documentary for its scope and importance.

WHO'S SINGIN' OVER THERE? – 0
JAI BHIM COMRADE – 1

Thanks to everyone involved for making this little experiment of a cup possible, especially to Javier for managing it in a friendly way. Look forward to seeing what we come up with next time. :toast:

i enjoyed both of these, and very nearly all the films picked by both managers. big thanks to the rest of the managers and to javier and rohit for organizing and uploading (and also meg who's not around but hopefully will come back sooner rather than later).
I will talk breathlessly about Spanish and Portuguese cinema, João César Monteiro, Ritwik Ghatak, and Jacques Rivette, and hardly ever about anything else.

Personally, Who's Singing Over There is the better crafted film which also has important subject matter. Jai Bhim Comrade though sometimes sloppy in its presentation is very passionate and bursting with important subject matter. But, I'm judging films and not political/social justice.
I'd like to thank both Tugging and Rikscha for creating their genres and with experienced backgrounds choosing very cool films. I was able to see many valuable works that I would never be able to find otherwise, most especially Tugging's Indian odyssey of cultural/social/historical themes presented by some personally unknown and very talented filmmakers.

GENRE:  “MATRIBHUMI’S MALAISE”

Pig (Fandry, India, 2013) Nagraj Manjule
Funeral Rites (Samskara, India, 1970) Pattabhirama Reddy
27 Down (India, 1974) Awtar Krishna Kaul
Ghashiram kotwal (India, 1976) K. Hariharan, Mani Kaul, Saeed Akhtar Mirza, Kamal Swaroop
Umbartha (India, 1982) Jabbar Patel
Alms for a Blind Horse (Anhey gorhey da daan, India, 2011) Gurvinder Singh
Jai Bhim Comrade (2011) Anand Patwardhan

GENRE:  “EXISTENTIAL ROAD TRIPS”

My Way Home (Így jöttem, hungary, 1965) Miklós Jancsó
Messidor (Switzerland, 1979) Alain Tanner
Perfumed Nightmare (Mababangong Bangungot, Philippines, 1977) Kidlat Tahimik
Der rechte Weg (Switzerland, 1983) Peter Fischli, David Weiss
AKA Serial Killer (Ryakushô renzoku shasatsuma, Japan, 1969) Masao Adachi
Mandala (South Korea, 1981) Im KwonTaek
Who’s Singin’ Over There? (Ko to tamo peva, Yugoslavia, 1980) Slobodan Sijan

Thanks everyone who participated for an adventurous and unusual Cup, especially Javier, Tugging and Meg for their behind the scenes work and attention.

WHO'S SINGIN' OVER THERE? – 0
JAI BHIM COMRADE – 1

Who's Singing Over There was delightful. At the beginning I thought it was going to have a serious tone on war, but then the characters turned out to show their funny and bizarre side. Perfect writing, perfect timing and perfect tune always sung with that subtle combination of despair and wonder. Really interesting characters. All of them, wild and fragile, with some talent, but ironically always depending on external circumstances and variables. Those are the kinds of films that should have sequels or re-takes, and not those of superheroes or industry franchises.

Jai Bhim Comrade is not a masterpiece documentary, but tries to show and reconstruct a local conflict that could eventually escalate to a regional o global one, from many different perspectives. The film illustrates the dangerous cocktail of ideology, religion, politics, economy and their impact on common people. Its huge amount of information is a good invitation to do research on history and local politics to compare sources (After all, the documentary itself could be hiding or covering something just as all documentaries do). After the Paris events, my only conclusion is to study hard and to research as much as possible trying to get to know the vast causes of any cultural conflict.

Congratulations Rischka!!!

It was a long road to come to this moment :toast:

And thanks to all the participants who voted, commented or cheered throughout the 51 matches!!
Thanks specially to Tuggingonmustaches, Meg and M_Penalosa for helping us to get the films available for the cup.

After 11 months of work I want to thank everybody for the patience. Even when I found a comfortable way to manage the whole cup by doing it mostly on Mondays, it was really demanding but at the end it was so worthy. To run a Cup all we need is a community of cinephiles and film enthusiasts!

Congrats to the winner, and thanks to everyone who participated.
To please the majority is the requirement of the Planet Cinema. As far as I'm concerned, I don't make a concession to viewers, these victims of life, who think that a film is made only for their enjoyment, and who know nothing about their own existence.

Congrats Rischka for winning this year's cup! I shouldn't have progressed this far if some of the managers hadn't dropped out along the way. I am glad some of you found the films from my genre rewarding.

Special thanks to Javier for running the cup like a statesman. His friendly, consensus building and non-confrontational approach should be a lesson to all past and future organizers.

Finally, thanks a lot to all the participants who stuck it out through the entire competition. You guys/gals are the real heroes of this cup.

In this 11 months many things happened. I married, moved twice and even became a father in September, fortunately in between rounds :sh: I kept this as a secret to not to create any feeling of uncertainty during the cup. Thanks to Rohit's unreserved support, everything worked very well in all stages and specially during those days.

And to think rischka didn't want to be a manager at the start. :P Extraordinary Stories is like the granddaddy of the road trip genre (if not the bible), but yeah, it's been used before.

Even bigger congratulations to Javier though! :cheer: With news of a wedding and a baby, it's as if this cup was destined to end like a Jane Austen novel.

Thanks a lot Brian. Where It Is Cold in the Sun was really beautiful, much more a statement, a state of the soul than a film. It is still with me. Thanks a lot for choosing it and the whole powerful metaphor as your genre.
