What editing equipment do you use? I've tried to do something similar with collaging bits of different movies together, but the freeware that's available makes it a bit of a challenge, especially when working with shorter segments of film.

Lencho, It's been a mix. It was all cut in Final Cut 6 (i think it was 6) but to get the videos into 6 i used

MPEG Streamclip
Macx DVD Ripper Mac Free Edition
Handbreak
Mac The Ripper
Ripit

Sometimes I would have to use two programs, for instance, ripping footage so MPEG Streamclip would recognize it. I think Streamclip for grabbing clips, and Macx DVD Ripper for ripping films were my favorite. A lot of trial and error. All those are free except, which I paid 30 bucks for, and, before it crapped out on me, I found it pretty unimpressive. But you can download it free and do like, 5 or 10 rips, so it's good if, say, you're grabbing films from the library and your other programs aren't letting you open a specific movie file. It's a nice back up strategy.

There's also Cut Detector, to inventories a film into specific cuts, which I didn't use but sounds interesting. Harder to get I think.

Hope that answers your Qs. If you're projects still in action you can always right me, although my process is very trial and error and I imagine someone more informed might have a better explanation for conversions without quality loss.

neato. does the following video feature you, herecomeseverybody?

if so, then i like your hair. if not, then you should have hair like that

also: i use windows movie maker to edit video, but that's only cuz i'm poor, and wmm came with my os. i'd like to fiddle around with something else at some point, but don't know what good free downloadable programs there are, nor do i want to spend money on anything that i'm not entirely sure about to begin with. recs are always welcome, should anyone have any...

also again: any recs for sound equipment are also always welcome. the cheapo mics i got just ain't doin the trick :fpfpfth:

HereComesEverybody, I just watched your film.
As you mentioned the Trial-and-error in your process, I think your work has a really interesting structure made of those eclectic materials that you turn into blocks of sketches/topics with a wonderful general timing. The 3D/CGI sequence was my favorite and just wondered about the richness of those enigmatic images combined with the specific music you chose for it. Thanks a lot for sharing it here. Very impressive.

@ arty of the irst art: Have you tried Videopad? It is a more complex program for starters and it can offer you more control and options than WMM. The latest version has a cost, but in their website they are supposed to offer a non-comercial version for free and it is also possible that previous versions are available for free. http://www.nchsoftware.com/videopad/index.html

javierquintero,

Thank you so! I appreciate the support so much. The artist for that CGI stuff is Beny Tchaicovsky

I bought two or three of his films (Dimensional Connections, The Call, maybe a third) and watched them all. Each was basically 70 minutes of crossfade 90s psychedelia, cut into 3 minute new age songs. I found them very rewarding.

The song there is The Fugs, so, there was really no two ways about it :laugh:

@arty of the irst art

yes Yes ! That is I! I was impressed but your stalking skills, and then I remembered my name is on that movie and that video. LULZ. There will be a much much much much better version of that song soon I promise!!!!

@paufil lomo Thanks so much!

The 10 Commandments is a track by The Fugs and yes, it is incredibly Incredible String Bandsy. How you know I love that group?
