The Belfry (Patrick Sheard, 2016) It's finally here, for better or worse, it's here: http://letterboxd.com/film/the-belfry/ This was the hardest project I've ever done. To give you some insight, it was originally planned to be a 50 minute musical. Edited by Patrick, Oct 9 2016, 02:22 AM.

I quite enjoyed this. Love the 16mm, and the cinematography in general. It feels like the early Ackerman films a bit in the way the lighting is used, and the sort of reveling in the different textures. Congrats on completing it, you can feel that it must have been quite an undertaking. |

Thank you! I don't know if I've already disclosed this with my moaning scattered throughout random posts here and there, but this was actually shot on digital! Half of the effort was achieving the look of film, so I'm glad to hear I've achieved that

Wow. That's awesome. I actually just abandoned a project I was going to shoot 16mm in lieu of faking it digitally. So I know how hard it is to do well. You completely convinced me. |

It's still not got a scratch on true 16mm, but all things considered, I think it's turned out rather well! Especially considering it was filmed with cheap lenses on a 550D (t2i). |

![]() thanks for sharing Patrick, quite creepy with many questions. great build up to the dramatic ending there seems to be a word missing? or not? and I can't resisting saying I would have changed that last bit to read "The young woman ushers them inside in silence, then pauses a moment as if to see whether anyone witnessed their arrival." because what is there feels unnecessarily cumbersome esp when read out loud but don't mind me, I was a copy checker for many years at a large ad agency it's a chronic tic that endures

Thanks, Meg Yeah, the text was ripped straight from the script for the narration, which was checked over by a 'famous perfectionist'. I wasn't too happy with it myself, but I had to add it to give the film some context and I don't think the writer would've been too pleased if I had written it myself. Luckily the text is that of the old man's, so that's how I sort of excused it in my head, haha. It's been an absolute headache getting it done, and because of my total lack of reach online, there's no way I'll amass a decent amount of views if I re-uploaded it. So I'll get that fixed for the festival screenings version! Thanks for pointing that out, though ![]() This post is probably poorly worded too, I've been up all night finishing the film and publishing it, so forgive me if any of the above posts make no sense! Well done, Patrick! I've yet to watch it, but I'm sure it's good! Great that you've got something under your belt, something to show for yourself. First step taken! |

Thanks a lot guys! RE: Flip - Yeah, as I explained to Meg, I trusted that everything on the script was spelled correctly, as it was edited by, and I quote, a "committed perfectionist". I must take some responsibility, though, as I had been editing a lot of the film very late at night - the text cards in particular, were done in the early hours of the morning. |

I'd say it's my first step taken towards the type of cinema that I wish to make, but yeah, this is my 3rd and longest film! I wanted to move as far away from the kind of films that I used to make, with this latest effort - hence the use of colour and silence. Ultimately, it's not the film I wanted to make, but I learned so much from this project; be it the business, people and a lot about myself. Cutting a long story short; I was promised a lot from the project, yet to no avail. I'm proud of what I have achieved, even if it's not the film I had originally envisaged. I like to think that it's at least a pry into what could have been. Edited by Patrick, Oct 10 2016, 02:01 PM.

Patrick!! I just watched it! I liked it a lot. What you said reminded me of what Woody Allen said in an interview, that almost none of the films he made ended up turning out anything like how he thought they would, that very few were what he'd intended them to be at the outset. He was more often than not extremely disappointed with the finished product versus what he'd imagined they'd be when he first wrote them. I just saw this little film-essay about movement and editing in Kurosawa's work. Hope you'll enjoy it as much as I did. Edited by pabs, Oct 11 2016, 03:17 PM.

Thanks! I already saw this a while back, an interesting little video. I'll have to get back to making my own essay's again, as it seems to be the only effective way of accumulating an audience
