so, tobe hooper is dead. we have lost a master tonight. if the mangler is all you've seen, i urge you to check out some of his more palatable work (eggshells) or more widely loved work (the texas chain saw massacre). he has perhaps influenced my ideas more than any other artist, this hurts more than all the losses in the last few years combined. |

I was thinking of the pretty scenes in Eggshells when I took this ![]() We were invited to watch Eggshells and get some questions ready for Tobe on mubi, he was going to answer them but it never happened for some reason. Sorry your man is gone Josiah, I did enter into the spirit of Mangler but basically it's not my thing though could see mastery at work. |

eggshells really is a phenomenal film, and that screenshot you took is a lovely one. not offended at all that mangler didn't win this - i expected as much, and didn't see the other film, so have no claim as to which is better! just thought it was funny (ironic?) that tobe's death coincided with the closing of his loss in this poll -- the man for his whole life just seemed so drawn to moments of bad luck via complete happenstance |

thinking about movies to watch for October and was reminded that I ended up seeing The Mangler shortly after Hooper's passing. it mostly works for me. the extent to which I like it is the extent to which its anti-capitalist polemic takes the form of a Grimm Bros-esque cautionary tale. in this light, the tonal shifts seem to have a grotesque quality (mean that in a positive sense). it's a film that really makes you wonder what exactly Hooper had in mind, and whether that might make you more or less sympathetic to the text. I also enjoyed how Hooper handled the obligatory low-budget B-movie (actually, more like C or D!) genre trappings. the film's message feels like a transmission trying to break through. |

I really love this reading/engagement in gen., James -- the cruel and also brilliant thing about Hooper's work (it is perhaps the reason I continue coming back to it) is this 'repressed transmission' sense -- he is an artist who was constantly fighting against a system (not necessarily a studio system, but at the very least a system that asked for 'tastefulness') that was disinterested in his ideas and fought to keep them silent (the amount of films he was fired from is insane) -- it is a miracle that we have the ten or fifteen brilliant works we have, considering the constant impedance he faced. |
