UK: The Queen of Spades (Thorold Dickinson, 1949) [horror]

Syria: The Extras (Nabil Maleh, 1993) [chamber piece]

Vote for either xUK or xSyria (italicization unnecessary).

The deadline for voting is 12:00 AM CST on Sunday, September 10.

If you need the link or password for the blog, please let me know.

Final score: Syria 6, UK 5.

2 extraordinary films. Great job managers.

so sorry to all managers that i won't be able to participate in this (or possibly next) round due to generally being too busy to watch stuff I'm not already familiar with [half attentions and all])

xSyria. Yes, even above Anton Walbrook and Edith Evans and Thorold Dickinson and DP Otto Heller and Alexander Pushkin--although I loved Queen of Spades.

Yes, I have great respect for Nabil Maleh's writing and directing. One day I hope to find Bikaya Suar (1980) with English subs. His filmography seems to be much larger than what imdb has to offer. I hope time will correct that--a world class director I'm just discovering. Thanks K.

I will talk breathlessly about Spanish and Portuguese cinema, João César Monteiro, Ritwik Ghatak, and Jacques Rivette, and hardly ever about anything else.

One of the most entertaining lover's trysts I've ever seen on screen :)

Lot going on in this film, really found it very moving in light of current suffering and I'm just glad it exists

Wasn't particularly enamored with either, but xUK was a fun romp for sure.

I don’t know if I watched a different movie to everyone else, but instead of getting the evocative gothic horror that The Queen of Spades promised to be, I got a wooden and overwrought studio production instead. :-/

The Extras, on the other hand, proved to be a dynamic chamber piece, effectively touching on broader social and cultural themes despite its one-room setting.

The word 'overwrought' came to mind, but I decided that was a little harsh, and I settled on "immaculately wrought but lifeless."

The Extras took all possible risks and was always too close to self-annihilation, but happily it never happened. A work truly made on the edge. I love when pain and despair become tender clay in the hands of a daring filmmaker... when reality falls apart and the whole universe collides so easily when confronted to any so-called 'certainty'.

On the other hand, The Queen of Spades seems to be the final result when using a formula to play safe at reaching some quality standard. More a well crafted souvenir coin than a film.
