USSR: The Contest (Bulat Mansurov, 1964) [musical]

Japan: The Wolves (Hideo Gosha, 1971) [yakuza]

Vote for either xUSSR or xJapan (italicization unnecessary).

The deadline for voting is 12:00 AM CST on Monday, September 25.

If you need the link or password for the blog, please let me know.

Final score: Japan 8, USSR 4.

xJapan

The ussr flick had an old man say "young squirts" which was pretty great but overall I agree with the consensus. It had its moments. On the other hand, the wolves, while a little long feeling, was a fine spectacle

Considered voting ussr just to teach you to pick some shorter fucking movies. That's three in a row over 2 hours paw

The next two rounds (32 films) are going to be quite easy to cover, as they're more comprised of short films. Sometimes even a experimental flick is shorter than the short. :toast:

watched The Contest in the end... it was pretty good! i didn't really like or see the reason for the humanistic message though. the music and the hats were enough already, you know. maybe the message was politically 'relevant' at the time but nowadays it just comes off as a bit simplistic. for me. but every other part of the movie was good
