Not knowing which movies are actually in competition is a level of disorganization I'm not willing to put up with.

Not knowing which movies are actually in competition is a level of disorganization I'm not willing to put up with.
Maybe disorganization isn't the right word. I have a spreadsheet with everyone's picks. However, FLABREZU decided to change his pick Saturday night, by informing me (orally) that his pick was "Der Zenker"... then not sending me a message with any information. I tried for half an hour this morning to find out what "Der Zenker" meant. I even searched "nker" in FLABREZU's log, but nothing showed up, which means even "Der Zinker" isn't there. So how could I possibly have found out what he meant? In the end, I set up the rules to be what I thought would be foolproof. Everyone sends in their movies beforehand and has to message me if they want to change a pick. Months to think about it. I think of all the times I've posted the wrong movie, it's been me missing a message once. Every other time has been someone forgetting to inform me, or informing me late, or in this new case, informing me in a manner not preferred then not following up in any way that would enable me to find out what movie was actually being picked.

What exactly can I do differently? Maybe I should have been more strict in the first place. Well, that's why I decided to be strict in this case. Rather than delaying the round even further until I could find out what "Der Zenker" meant, I started the round with FLABREZU's most recent genre pick, World on a Wire.

So really, there is no disorganization, and no confusion. The match has been started. It's World on a Wire vs. Minus. A little sci-fi on sci-fi action.

I see how you read that sentence, but it wasn't my intention to assign blame for the situation to anybody. The person in my sentence who didn't know what movie had been selected was me, not you or anyone else, and "the level where I no longer know what's going on" was the level up with which I would not put.

But the question has been answered, the problem has been resolved, and we can move forward with the game.

i didn't have too many choices for iranian genre films, especially since i wanted to focus on recent cinema, so i went with a film by kazem mollaie, a 36 year old director whose first feature film, kupal will, by serendipitous coincidence, have its usa premiere this week (sept 17 at the arizona underground film festival). the film i'm showing in this round is minus, a 23 minute short from 2009. minus won a few 'best experimental film' awards at iranian film festivals, though it has enough sci-fi elements that i think it fits well enough here.

But isn't The Deer (one of your favorites, right?) an "action film"? That's what I thought you'd pick for this round, and would've given me an excuse to see it.

Definitely not an action film in my opinion...although, Kimiai made some fantastic noirish thrillers

Welt am Draht has an interesting concept but unfortunately locations are next to "most dispiriting workplace you could imagine" so it makes all the intended futuristic prediction tale a bit difficult to follow.

xGermany for sure. Minus was an interesting piece but I find many narrative short films lack cohesion in terms of visual development -- this is something my short film round pick later on explicitly focuses on, actually. There are many interesting moments in MINUS, though nothing that explicitly pushed it above WORLD ON A WIRE for me, which.... does anything even need to be said? The mirrors as a thesis for the entire film is perhaps my favorite mode of analysis in that particular case.

World on a Wire is a longtime favorite so it'd be hard to beat, and Minus doesn't manage - despite nice sound design, it doesn't really go anywhere.

the deer is great, but i'd need to have stretched the definition of 'action film' pretty far in order to include it. but since i chose a short film, you have some free time left over to watch something else! i'd wager that you'll enjoy the deer quite a bit more than the film i chose.

Much respect for Kazem Mollaie's Minus. Had the primary ingredients often seen stretched out into feature country, nice pace and overall simplicity. Unfortunately it's running against a German juggernaut in World on a Wire--and yes Achilles can catch the Tortoise.

i'm watching world on a wire: attempted to make screenshots but gave up after about half an hour. it's too dynamic and overwhelming with all the glass, mirrors, reflections. and how does this dude remind me so much of jack nicholson in chinatown :P

i didn't expect my film to be competitive against world on a wire, so feel free to vote how you like! as long as a few people found it worthwhile, and some people thought something like 'i didn't realize films like this were made in iran', then i'll be happy i showed it, and it got one vote, so that's a bonus. :)

World on a Wire is one of Fassbinder’s most dazzling films, which for him is really saying something.

Minus definitely isn't something I expected from Iran. A really slick production, though I'm not sure it amounted to much in the end.
