Well, the 2017 Cup is almost over. Thanks to everyone who's managed, voted, posted, or been involved in any way.

But with this Cup ending... a new Cup is about to begin. What should we do for the 2018 Cup? So far on SCFZ we've done:

2015: Genre/Theme Cup, group RR then knock-out
2016: Directors Cup, group RR then knock-out
2017: Nations Cup, swiss system pairings (with different genre confines each round)

I wouldn't mind another Directors Cup, but it also might be interesting to do something entirely new. What do you guys think?

---

EDIT: Looks like discussion re: a 2018 Cup will be postponed a few months. But, starting in January, we will definitely be doing a movie club

I'll manage whatever as long as I don't have to make a film, that seems like a lot of work

Right, I'm not going to be directing my first film either. Unless Patrick does it for me. I can be the producer.

Not sure I’d take part in a movie club, but I’m always down for another cup, preferably like the Genre Cup in 2015 where we had relatively free license.

So that's regarding a cup right?

Any interest in the movie club? It'd be one movie a week and of course you could skip if you had/wanted to (though there will probably be some rule like if your turn to pick comes up you must've watched X of the past Y movies to pick)

I think that as long as people are conscientious about picking movies that few of the other players have seen, there's no need to set a number.

EDIT: I would, for example, feel justified in running Güeros in this game; 2500 views on imdb, but only two people here at SCFZ beside myself have seen it.
Good point. I agree.

p-funk: maybe you should start a separate cup for those users who want to make their own films...?

the pre-discussion re: parameters, rules, etc. alone would be fun and interesting

;)

I wasn't actually being serious when I recommended it but I think it's great that people are actually up for it. Not sure how I'd feel about it in the context of a cup, though. :ermm:

I'm in for the regular Cup idea or the film club à la Simultaneous Watching & Analisis in the old theauteurs.com days or the way they do it in the icmforum.

I would also participate in a separate cup (beta version :P ) for making films on our own. In my personal case it'd be a great excuse for forcing myself to make movies on a limited budget and time. I know some of you make films too, so why not?

Wouldn't it be great to see something like the kino-glaz quotidianne images with additional characters, sounds, pathos and spice all together in a humble beta-test cup?

I'm in for whatever we settle on, as long as I don't have to do anything until March.

It's not required that you load films into a sharing service and hand out the URL -- if you can curate an interesting selection from free online streams, that will be fine. Of course, you don't even have to commit to doing that, if you want to play but don't care to be a content-provider.

should we do something where those participating submit preliminary lists of their chosen underseen films? perhaps as a way to doublecheck that certain films are in fact underseen in this community? if so, the individual lists of films could be combined into a single master list, and then chosen in a "randomly" curated way (ala the yearly polls)

Good idea. What is too seen? If 3 super chimps have seen it? 4? 5?

NO.

The whole idea is to get away from complicated protocols and the need for a management level that "runs things".

I think the general idea has worked it's way throughout our discussion: everyone picks a movie and then we watch/discuss one a week, in a random order. The only question I can see is whether we have some sort of rule on how seen a movie can be or if we just ask everyone to in good faith pick some underground shit. I think either will be fine, whatever popular opinion is I'm sure will work out

To please the majority is the requirement of the Planet Cinema. As far as I'm concerned, I don't make a concession to viewers, these victims of life, who think that a film is made only for their enjoyment, and who know nothing about their own existence.

where's meg? she always has some good ideas

that is kind <heart> but I doubt I've ever had a single one

I will say however that it is remarkably difficult to get people to watch a movie a week and discuss it, this has been demonstrated on every movie club attempt of this nature I've ever seen anyway

For any chance of longevity and participation, some incentives may have to be conjured up  :( :hurray:
