Personally, I don't care if a movie has already been seen by all members or by none. I don't see a problem in watching any film any number of times, if one is willing. As with any other art, appreciation can only grow through deeper involvement, and I also regard any rewatch or re-viewing of a movie as a new encounter.

So I'd say let's give each film/selection a chance - we will see how it goes by the responses: If there's not much discussion and/or viewing happening of a title (because many people have already seen the film and choose not to discuss it or watch it again) there will soon come another title anyway.

To please the majority is the requirement of the Planet Cinema. As far as I'm concerned, I don't make a concession to viewers, these victims of life, who think that a film is made only for their enjoyment, and who know nothing about their own existence.

^I want to come and live with you

So just to clarify, this is a free-wheeling affair then, with no consensus as to the central purpose outside of having a bit of fun.

Is this approach kindling the fire of allure in the bosom of all? Just thought a hands up on this might be important at this point.

Specifically:
If you have not seen the film yourself, and thus don’t really know what you’re foisting on the Club, doesn’t matter as life’s a surprise

There is no criteria for choosing, outside of the stipulation that most champs have not seen it (although not all have agreed that this matters)

If it is crap quality, that doesn’t matter either, all part of the fun

Five hours, twenty hours, 10 mintues, doesn’t matter

If you don’t want to watch other people’s films, doesn ‘t matter, (but if you’re not a bastard you will do the right thing)

No time limit on watching, open to discussion depending, and I guess no actual “membership” to the club, it’s just whoever drops in any time during the year (presume this is being thought of as a year long project)

If there is no discussion taking place outside a few desultory pulse-stoppers, Lencho/the manager will call on the next in queue curator to provide new fodder

About like that, Meg, yeah... but your description sounds like there could be a goodish amount of downtime, and I think I've got a handle on how to avoid that.

About like that, Meg
yeah ok...I have just seen it so often that people soon start grumbling about "not spending my time sitting through crap" when discernment/ quality is not a high consideration (as it is with all Cups, an integral part of the process of garnering affection admiration and votes) "fun" soon flies out the window with the sparrows & cinephiles of the calibre of SCFZers weary to shuffle off to greener pastures, viewing time being in most people's lives a juggling/prioritising exercise

Just as long as everyone agrees and is on he same page, as wba I suspect has a more blithe and airy approach to things than the vast majority of persons on the planet

OK, let's see... We have six curators. Rischka, did you want to curate? That would make seven. Looks like we'll cycle through the list seven or eight times in a year's time, giving each movie a week and a fraction...

We start on Jan 1st; that's two weeks from now, but I'm going to be decisive about setting everything up well ahead of time because Xmas and NY could interfere with peoples' priorities.

If there's anything else to be discussed, have at it. Likewise, if anyone else wants to sign up to curate. Once I'm confident everything's sorted, I'll open a thread with rules and procedures. Bure should be ready with a link for his Japanese movie @Dec 29-31, Holymanm, the next in line, should be prepared to post his first around Jan 2-3. I hink I'll ask each subsequent person to provide their movie a day or two after discussion begins on the movie preceding theirs. (If we have to tweak the rhythm any, we can work that out as we go along.)

What 'curator' means in this forum? It's somebody who's in charge of museum in everyday use.
English is not maternal language for many of us, you know.

What about those "non-joiner" types like myself? Can I watch, think and reply without finding downloadable titles and putting them inside this machine I don't understand? :chair:

Hi guys,

I tend to not participate too much, even though I wish I did more. This seems really interesting. I love challenges, games, etc that push me to watch stuff out of my comfort zone. I've come across pretty cool stuff through forums. So I'm interested, I read the previous posts, but I'm still kind of confused.

So this is just a curator recommends a film and we have to watch it? No grading? No comments?

What, if any, requirements for movies are there?

Who can be a curator?

When does each curator choose a film?

Are the films just something the curator wants to show to others? Are there limits of views? Region? Popularity?

Thanks for the info guys

Hi, sac -- here's how it works:

Anyone can be a curator. Say the word and you're in. Anybody that doesn't want to participate in that way can watch and discuss the movies that come into play, same as anybody else.

There's a list of curators in alphabetical order; each one presents a movie in turn. We anticipate that each movie will keep us busy for 7 - 10 days, watching and then discussing it, before we move on to the next curator's choice. No rating, no ranking, no need to judge one movie against another.

No restrictions have been placed on which movies are eligible to be shared. There's a general idea that the movies chosen should be ones that not more than 2-3 people in the playing circle have seen, and there's a general idea that people are likely not to be happy with watching low-res, feeble copies of stuff, but those are soft guidelines that curators are free to violate if they want. The other soft guideline is that the film should be in English or available with English subtitles, since that's the one language that everyone here can function in, and you don't want to give people movies they can't understand. Unless you do.

I guess that covers everything, yes? The first movie, Bure's pick, will go up on 1/1/2018, and we'll spend a week or so on that before moving on to Erika Jayne's choice.

Thanks Lencho!

I guess I have two more questions: Is there a way to know which movies have only been seen by a couple of people in the playing circles? Or do you just choose something not very common?

Second: Do I have to provide the film?

I want to join.

The quickest and easiest way to determine who's seen what is to connect with a lot of the relevant members at SCFZ; you can see at a glance how many members of your network have watched any given movie. Failing that, I guess checking how many people have seen it in the general population; you can get numbers for comparison at LB or at imdb.

You can share movies from your own cloud drive archive or provide a link to any streaming service that doesn't require membership or rental fees. (YouTube, putlocker, etc.) Doesn't matter which. Torrent-sharing networks aren't available to everyone, so that's not a viable option.
I'll add your name to the curators list.
