SCFZ Movie Club, the rotating-projectionist game. Enrolled members take turns "screening" a movie, then we sip jug wine, eat stale crackers and pontificate to each other for awhile before the next one starts.

THE PLAYERS:
The starting lineup looks like this:

Blue Soldier (Round 2, 3: no-show)
Bure
Erika Jayne (Round 2: no-show, round 3: resigned) :frypan:
Flabrezu (Round 2, 3: no-show)
Holymanm
Javier Quintero
Josiah Morgan (Round 2: no-show, round 3: resigned)
Kanafani
Lencho
Mario Gaborovic
Mauries
Sacmersault
WBA

Anyone who wants to join can do so at any time. Announce your availability and your name will be added to the list above. Ditto for resignations. All SCFZ members are welcome to watch movies and take part in the discussions, of course; that's not restricted to the players listed above.

"No-shows" are welcome to catch up on their missed contributions whenever possible; they should work out the details with Lencho if they want to slide back into the game.

THE SCHEDULE:

Bure will make the first movie available on or before 1/1/2018. People will watch it and discuss it in this thread for as long as it holds their interest.

Erika Jayne will make the second movie available around the time that people begin discussing the first movie. I'm estimating that'll be 1/3 - 1/4 or thereabouts.

Each subsequent curator will be expected to make their offering available around the time the discussion begins for the movie before theirs. As we get a clearer sense of the rhythm this process follows, we'll be able to fine-tune the guidelines for scheduling as needed.

File-sharing links or links to online streaming resources (no pay-per-view) will be posted for each participants' movies on the Resources page.

THE RULES SOFT GUIDELINES

It's probably better to keep things clean, elegant and linear, and discuss only one movie at a time, holding off on the newest movie in queue until it looks like interest has died down for the one already under discussion. Allowing 24 hours of down-time after one discussion seems to fixxle out before beginning the next one seems like an easy way to ensure that.

If it doesn't actually happen that way, it ain't no big thing.

In terms of film-choices and the content of what each person provides, common sense will dictate a few factors that will make some movies less attractive to a large number of players.

1) Attractive high-res copies are preferable to murky shit that's being projected from the bottom of a fish tank.
2) Most people will not be willing to watch a movie in a language they don't understand. English (original soundtrack or subtitles) is the one language that everyone here is comfortable with.
3) The focus of the game is discovering movies that are new to us, so some effort should be made to select movies that only a tiny handful of players have already seen.

FILMS PROGRAMMED:

Round one
Spoiler: click to toggle

Round two
Spoiler: click to toggle

Round three
Cinderella Jones - Berkeley, 1946
A Yank At Oxford - Jack Conway, 1938
Bianca - Nanno Moretti, 1984

it's not discerning imo if we're all gonna watch as many of the movies as we can anyway!

not sure if it's time to move on to NOBODY'S CHILDREN yet or not but I have watched it, and on the note of negative thoughts didn't like it that much either! I'll save further thoughts about the brusque nature of the film until the decision is made to move on , tho

So, how bout that Nobody's Children, then? The floor is open.

FLABREZU, if you could post your movie at your earliest convenience, that would be a good thing.

Has everybody shot their wad over Nobody's Children already? Is it time for us to turn our attention to Survive Style and to ask Holymanm to post his movie?

i just got into it like six months ago, and i was pleasantly surprised with how good it is. early seasons are obvs the best. later/recent seasons are very good, but a lil more storyline-driven (a fairly common thang with tv shows; if you watch it, you'll see what i mean). the ep i mentioned above is brilliant, and imo acts as a great segue into the tv show; esp if you wanna watch just an ep or two to see if you like it, before you delve in from the very beginning

I can't see the schedule, just names of the people who participate - but not the order. When is my turn?

Also, does anybody have any ideas about ways that we might make this game a more vibrant and exciting activity?

@Lencho and Josiah

Maybe each movie should have its own thread? In that way users can go back and discuss a different aspect of the film anytime in the future (even if our grandchildren come to visit this site in the next decades). Remember we can also link threads to folders from authors, continents, countries, etc., so other users can find them by following different paths.

In regards to make it vibrant/exciting I propose:
a) We curators should add some screen caps or images to promote our film (yes, I know we sometimes are busy or posting from the phone, but at least we should try).
b) In addition to their comment, users who post in the thread should also leave an open question, just as they do in some movie clubs in order to encourage further discussion. Maybe nothing will happen or maybe it will trigger some interesting ideas to come.

These are both good ideas, Javier. If there's no further discussion/no dissenting voices, I'll start opening a new thread for each movie when its turn comes up. And it would indeed be good if curators did a little more to sell their movies (screen-caps, intros...)

I agree, there really should be a separate thread for each recommended film. This thread will get cluttered very quickly otherwise, and maybe a week or two, or after a possible rewatch, another thought will pop up, and there'd be nowhere to discuss that. This is already a subforum, so, it won't cause too much clutter.

I'm admittedly a couple films behind already, even though I have every intention of watching all of them. Also, I'm not on here everyday, as it's not part of my internet ritual.

Well, it looks like it's time to move on to La Belle Verte -- Javier, if you'd like to introduce it, go ahead and open a new thread.

Josiah, ready to post your movie?

If you all agree I can also move the previous comments into separate threads for each of the movies so they can match.

Sorry for being absent. I'm behind in the films or ahead or something. I'm just watching Je' t'attendrai, which I now notice isn't even in the movie club. Afraid I've just been downloading willy-nilly and watching links that aren't on the movie club, but they're great wherever the hell they come from. Shit, oh dear. . . sorry. I'll grab Le Belle Verte and try to catch up.

so they can match.
Sounds good to me. And this thread will continue to exist for messages about the game itself as an ongoing, evolving process.

The schedule is done by alphabet. The next is Lencho, after him it's me, and then you others whose first letter of the nickname starts with N to Z.

The first message in this thread has a list of all the players in the order they'll be called on to pick a movie. There's also a list of the movies that have been shown, in order. The newest one at this moment is Sleepwalk by Sara Driver, with discussions still going on (maybe/maybe not) for the two or three before it.
