WBA's away from his office and asked me to open this thread for him. I haven't watched his movie yet, so I don't have anything to say here. I'll come back in a day or two after I've seen it.

I can imagine WBA using this as an example to trigger a discussion of post-cinema means of production and distribution. I can maybe imagine it being part of a discussion of ideas about creating narrative around a subject as lacking in dynamism as online activities, a theme that horror movies have been addressing in other ways lately. I can't imagine any other motive he might have had for bringing it to our attention. |

Yeah, this is most interesting to me as an example of alternative means of distribution. It was hard to find much information about this film online - I had to look around a bit even to find the director's name for my spreadsheet - so I presume it was distributed YouTube-only. The content is also potentially interesting, and I certainly am more familiar with the Tibetan situation now than I was before I watched it, but it really does seem almost perversely un-dynamic. The interviewer cuts out their own presence so an extremely long stretch of the film is just Wang Lixiong sitting on the couch and talking at length. There's a short segment where we get a wider view of his couch and we see his wife Woeser, who's a major activist and writer herself - but for some reason the filmmaker doesn't see fit to involve her in the conversation. |

Now that you mention it, it is kinda odd that she was just sitting there all "wife, be like a rose". WBA's been on-site, he's active and posting; maybe he'll step in and share some of his thoughts about The Dialogue. It looks like Mesnalty and I are still the only ones who have watched it... I watched 20 minutes and then I stopped. I didn't feel up to watching the whole thing. I find the Dalai Lama to be an insufferable buffoon, and the way he's portrayed as an Oriental Sage in the West triggers me, so I was afraid I'd lose it if he made a special guest appearance later on. |

To please the majority is the requirement of the Planet Cinema. As far as I'm concerned, I don't make a concession to viewers, these victims of life, who think that a film is made only for their enjoyment, and who know nothing about their own existence. letterboxd * tumblr * website | |

It doesn't seem like people are interested in talking about anything beyond liked/disliked and why, but maybe if you'd been here to direct a convo in those directions... Give it a shot if you like and have time open. Or don't. Edited by Lencho of the Apes, Apr 1 2018, 11:38 PM.

I don't like this trend of liking/disliking and not discussing anything, but honestly can't help it, and don't really see a way of improving this. I also don't like to start or moderate discussions of a film I select, because then it seems like the film is "mine" or I have more to say about it than others or my opinion is more informed than that of others, etc. I think that's fine when doing a world cup or a competitive format, where you want people to appreciate in a film what you appreciate in a film in order for it to "win", but is counter-productive when discussing the merits and many ways of viewing and experiencing a work of art. Your ideas and suggestions were exactly what I was hoping and going for personally. Unfortunately few here seem interested in discussing them. I enjoyed the mentioning of the wife activist just being in the background (and what that might imply, etc.). Surely there are many other ways of talking about (such a) film I or Lencho never considered, and I would love to hear what thoughts and impressions were triggered in other viewers. (I'm personally not interested in the Dalai Lama or Buddhism or any of that stuff, in case people were wondering, and am generally opposed to any religion and all religious leaders) Edited by wba, Apr 2 2018, 08:53 AM.
