![]() I suck at talking about why I like the art I like. This is a blacklist movie, made in Britain by Edward Dmytryk in 1949. It's based on a 1939 book about an Italian-American bricklayer living in Brooklyn during the Great Depression. It's sad and it rocks. The official title is "Give Us This Day" but it was released in the States as "Christ in Concrete," and, c'mon, that's a better title. So, enjoy Christ in Concrete. |

An interesting choice. I have good memories of the source novel; I look forward to watching this. |

I've never read the novel - anyone know how much of the dialogue comes right from the source? A lot of it's pretty florid and poetic, and the actors impressively manage to sell it. |

I understand the novelist tried to write his dialogue so that it sounded like the characters spoke ESL, so I'm guessing that toward the end, a lot of it comes straight from the book, maybe starting with that scene where Jeremias apologizes to Luigi and everyone else. I can't remember if I read some or all the book in the early 80s or only read an essay about it. I get it mixed up with The Pawnbroker by Edward Lewis Wallant. |

in the second half the dialogue is a bit florid and the um... title scene seems far too literal. some of those english actors didn't seem italian, much less from new york lol. but mostly i have a strange affection for the blacklist films, earnest as they are. the last scene was esp affecting. curtis when did you become a communist anyway i enjoyed this, had never heard of it so thanks for showing![]() Edited by rischka, Apr 6 2018, 03:48 AM.

That final death scene was like a death conceived by Rube Goldberg. |
