OK. This is the first movie from Tunisian director Moufida Tlatli. It's reportedly the first feature-length movie directed by a woman in the Arab world. A coming-of-age story centered on two generations of women working as servants in a palace. A very elegant and visually striking movie, it's frequently near the top of 'best Arabic movies ever' lists.

Here's a loving review.

Oops, didn't even notice the thread had been started! I was glad for the opportunity to watch this, since it's been on my watchlist for a while. A really beautiful piece of work. It's dense with ideas but still feels languid - a perfect illustration of the expression "still waters run deep." What I appreciate most about it is that it ties together ideas about colonialism, classism, and misogyny within the framework of a story of a single character without ever feeling forced.

really heartbreaking stuff as the girl grows up in a harem type situation from which her mother can't protect her. she escapes only to serve another man's whims

i liked the camaraderie of the women, in spite of rivalry they're all in the same boat and must make the best of it as the country struggles for independence around them. sensitive portrayal of the young girl's coming of age, becoming aware and learning to fear her own sexuality

Holy shit.

I liked just about everything about this, but I was especially taken by the way it presented the women's experience of the struggle-for-independence moment in Tunisia's history, a story that usually is told in terms of war, fighting, politicking, all defined as heroic male activities. None of that here.

I had a thought this morning. That tracking shot, pulling in to a close-up of Alia's face, where the image goes very visibly out of focus for a pair of seconds... could that be the cineaste's equivalent of the Pious Rugmaker thing, deliberately including one mistake within your work as a reminder that only Godd can make things what is perfect?
