a sci-fi romance thriller action you-name-it revenge tale between cactuses and cliffs where american supercars enter the serpentines seen from cool low angles in motion set to corny heavy metal hair music and when dust particles reflect on the august heat during fast rides and then charlie rides his bike shirtless looking cool while sherylin in her prime hotness flips burgers on roller skates at big kay's where bunch of kids hang around and then the main villain in all his oldschool leather jacket knifepointing badassness accompanied by proto-beavis&butthead sidekicks and clint fucking howard and his eraserheadish hairdo and the way he shouts "you lose the race you lose your car" and randy as an arrogant sheriff of the useless police force and all that in the middle of sungazed arizona summer filled with ridiculous lines and shifting gears in a car with automatic clutch and the wraith which resurrects in such a cool way oh boy is this film the most 80s thing in existence???

Oh, Godd... I watched a half hour of The Wraith last night. If I don't bail on it, it will only be out of a sense of duty. It sure is a definitive example of something, though. A thing I hate, but I've learned some little thing here by seeing those qualities I hate exemplified so perfectly. So thanks for that, I guess. |

I watched the first 30 minutes and sampled the rest. It's quite bad, I don't know what else to add. It's the kind of movie that maybe I would have enjoyed a little more if I watched it with others and we bonded over the silliness, but sadly I saw it alone. |

Haters line up, The Wraith is gonna turbointercept you and kill one by one.I didn't say it was good, it is simply a film I enjoy for different reasons than normally. For example, whenever Randy Quaid steps in and throws a line. Edited by Mario Gaborovic, May 18 2018, 10:34 AM.

Thanks Mario for your pick. Well yes, it's evidently bad, nonsensical, predictable, etc. I watched it and I kept asking myself: why the spacesuit? But I tried to go back to the 80's and early 90's and I realized that children and teenagers around my age back then were very influenced by crappy US movies and US TV series with all stereotypes and similar tropes in regards to teenage bullies, underdogs' vendettas, fast food and fast cars. ![]() ![]() A movie like this has everything you were supposed to like as a teenager. Part of global culture back then tried to impose such roles, fantasies and tastes. The roles played by adults (mainly policemen) are completely irrelevant or nonexistent. There are no parents, big brothers/big sisters or older people either. The depicted world seemed to be simplified to the point of showing roads, an oasis-like waterfall in the middle of summer dryness, the police station, the gang's headquarters and of course, the burger place. Obviously Lynch has gone far in regards to exploring such imageries and (US?) teenage tropes and obsessions in small towns. (Why the spacesuit? The outsider? The foreigner?) Furthermore, such structures can be the perfect fertile breeding ground for fascism, racial, religious and ideological hatred since institutions, and mostly Justice institutions do not seem to be efficient doing their jobs, so someone has to take justice on his/her own hands and the latter action is very highlighted and therefore becomes the core in this kind of movies. ![]() The way I see it now is like pure material for making internet memes and as a matter of fact I found one ready-made: ![]() Some other ones came to mind, modifying bodies or heads with Apple or Google logos, references to Silicon Valley, right and left-wing parties (now that presidential elections are just ahead in some countries, including mine). Could the whole movie be turned into a meme in order to reach or cope with other stereotypes nowadays? Again, why the spacesuit? the outsider? the foreigner? I wouldn't talk about The Wraith from the basis of my own taste. I recognize I sometimes watch trashy movies just based on shock value or on how bad/funny they are according to the risks they take. With authors like Bresson, Kurosawa, Tarkovsky, etc., it is possible to track some vision of humanity and purpose for making and watching films. With trashy movies on the other hand it is possible to track those monsters created by the dreams of reason (and its political agenda). Edited by javierquintero, May 19 2018, 02:23 AM.

Exactly. When I was younger, this was one of the coolest things I knew of. Today when I totally comprehend its silliness it gives me a diffferent sort of pleasure, but 'enjoyably bad' just isn't what each and every individual is into. Of course American folks here probably don't find anything spectacular about Tucson landscapes or souped up Daytonas and Trans Ams, which for us who live elsewhere is visual treat itself, especially back in the day. It's a totally WASP music video kind of world. - I don't get how this guy terrorized the town with a switchblade only. -Well he did have a shotgun in one of the scenes.
