So, I had an interview for an administrative assistant job and one of the questions that got thrown my way was my experience as far as writing went. I (somewhat reluctantly) admitted that I wrote fan fiction and that's where most of my experience was and that I was also a beta reader and was currently helping a writer edit her story. I didn't go into further detail than that. Did kind of get the vibe from the interviewer of "oh, fan fiction, well at least it's better than nothing." This isn't the first time I've come across someone who felt ambivalent about it. Actually, in my other fandom, on other boards, I've seen down right hostility about fan fiction, shipping, and the romance genre, which pretty much hits all the aspects of my writing. A couple of quotes that I remember were "stupid stories like that god awful dreck called fan fiction" and "(romance writing) is just sheer laziness on the part of the writer". Now, on the one hand, comments like that tend to make my blood boil, but on the other hand, it also makes me reluctant to bring up the subject of what I write to people I've only just met, particularly when the subject of hobbies and crafts gets broached. I' m curious to know if anyone else is in a similar situation? |

Except my children (because they have seen me on computer) , nobody in my family know that I'm going everyday on this site and that I'm writing fan fiction even if they know that I'm found of The Bionic shows because they can see at home my DVD and books. It's not because I'm ashamed of it but it's just like that : they didn't asked me about my passions and I didn't tell them either. In fact, since I was little, when I had a crush on actors or sportsmens or (don't laugh), one of your President or television presenters, I always kept it for me and share it with only one person very close to me (my grandmother and after her death an old aunt, ...). At work nobody know too. I've probably increase my english level but I don't use it a lot at work and the vocabulary of bionic fan fiction is far from the vocabulary I need in my job (ordering parts). I haven't written it in my Curriculum Vitae too even if it could mean something about writting English. Bionika |

Yeah, I tend not to talk too much about my fanfiction writing with my husband or my parents because they're either disinterested or negative about it. I kind of let it slip the other night to my husband that I had been writing a story, but when I tried to discuss anything with him about it beyond the fact that I had been writing one he had about as much enthusiasm for it as a cat taking a bath, so the subject got dropped pretty quickly. Stopped discussing my writing with my parents some time ago after hearing them say for the umpteenth time "So when are you going to do some REAL writing?" Had some friends at my old job that I use to talk to about it once in a while, but unfortunately we have not stayed in touch. I'd like to be to talk about creative writing and fanfiction and such (particularly in my RL) because it is one of my pastimes, I just wish it wasn't looked so down upon. |

"Ever felt like writing fan fiction was a dirty little secret? " It's not a dirty secret, it's only our little secret. Bionika |

OH MY GOSH YES!!! When I'm by myself or with other friends in my various fandoms, I feel very proud and comfortable with the fact that I absorb all my free time with writing novel-length fanficton stories, but when confronted about it in a public sense, I feel really embarrassed! As a teen in highschool, the connotation of writing fanfiction is really negative and is mostly thought of as "one of those super weird things that nerds do". I am quickly gaining massive experience in writing, using the internet, and absorbing and editing pre-existing characters -AND understanding all of it psychologically-, but it sometimes seems really pointless. Also on these lines: over the summer, I created a massive, in depth website as a fansite for a certain actor (who shall remain nameless, unless you want to know.. they aren't "bionic" related...). The site really shows my quick grasp of internet editing, website making, and creativity, but it's not like I could actually use it for anything or show it to a college as a project to get accepted there... :/ I'd be too embarrassed to show it -or if not embarrassed, then at least afraid that they'd think I was some weird dorky nerd who is way too obsessive.. (which is kind of true, but i don't want my college to think that...)

Sitting in front of the TV, watching an old rerun of The Big Valley, eating a Heath bar, while wearing a pair of sturdy Lee Jeans, a NASA baseball cap, and a "Colt's" hoodie; all while a paperback copy of "Cyborg" lays nearby...ah...the perfect image of a true fangirl of the great Lee Majors.... | |
