I'll start things off, just a bit, by saying I'm sitting around, enjoying watching Days Of Our Lives.

Do you remember Bo Brady? He was a real trip. I so wish he was back for Hope. Where are you going on your road trip?

Those were truely the DAYS, especially with Doctor, Mrs H and her donuts. I've been to Florida few times, mostly Orlando at Disney World and Universal Studios. But I've also been to Ft. Lauderdale. Say, has anyone but me ever been to Ireland by any chance?

I have never been to Ireland but would like to go because it's lots of beautiful landscape for photography. Would love to see the Devil's Causeway -- at least I think that's what it's called. It's similar in volcanic composition to the Devil's Post Pile near Yosemite and the Devil's Tower in Wyoming. My dad's family comes from Skibbereen, which is at the extreme southwest end of the island. Would have liked to have had an opportunity to tour the Waterford factory, but my in laws said that they had closed it for tours the last time they were there, which was about ten years ago, I think, so I don't know if the company changed their mind on that. As for the original questions, What are your hobbies? What languages do you speak? What is life like in your corner of the world? Hobbies -- Haven't really been able to do many crafts because I'm usually busy chasing my two year old. Though I do like being crafty when I can. We made Christmas ornaments for the grandparents, as in she made them with LOTS of Mommy's help. Tried to do wrapping paper too with finger paints on craft paper. That lasted for about 30 seconds before she gave a look of "What in the world is this STUFF on my HANDS!!" so that little adventure was over. I also like to do photography and stained glass, though I haven't done the last one in ages, unfortunately. I try to do some fanfiction writing every night, even if it's only a couple of sentences, but usually try to aim for a half page. Languages -- I can hold a conversation in Spanish. Had a couple of temp jobs when I was pregnant and had some coworkers whose native language was Spanish so I would speak to them in Spanish and they would speak to me in English so we could both practice the languages. I know some Japanese and a tiny amount of French and sign language. My corner of the world -- Right now it's wet, not sure if it's going to rain again or not. Kind of hoping it does. It always seems like a bit of a special occasion when it rains. Tucson, were I live, is on the edge of the Sonoran desert, where the Saguaro is native. They're kind of like the redwoods of cactus. It takes about 75 years for them to grow their first limb, or so I've heard. Even though it gets really hot here in the summer time, the North American monsoon is an amazing sight to see. There was a photographer that published a pretty popular coffee table book about a decade or so ago of lightning pictures and IIRC, a lot of them were taken around the Tucson area. |

You're so right, Beth, Inanna did do a spectacular job with those descriptions. Oh, btw I was at the Waterford plant for a tour while my Grandma and I were in Ireland. I did enjoy seeing them manufacture the glass items. But, I have to say, the tour was also very NOISY at the same time. Speaking of all things Irish, how many people have been to an authentic tea? It makes a lovely ladies day out, esp at this time of year. My Mom, my three sisters and I have been to several. In the past three years, my three year old niece has joined us. One I remember particularly fondly, we went to a tea house owned by two British women. It was only a few days after Diana died. It was the day Queen Elizabeth made her public condolance on TV. Anyway, we were there to see it. One of the women owners simply said, "Too little, too late." Edited by Bionic Kathy, Dec 21 2014, 10:18 AM.

There's a couple of tea houses here. The one about a half mile east of the University I hear is pretty good. Has teas from all over the world. Had a customer who I did some framing for that owned a posh little teahouse up in Oro Valley, a town just north of Tucson. Served her teas in China sets and had the tiered china for pastries, etc. One of the Tuscson magazines had a nice little write up about the place, that's what she got framed. As for Waterford, when my sister and I were about ten or eleven, my mom had us pick out our crystal patterns. I picked Lismore, but my sister picked her namesake, Sheila. Her pattern ended up being one of the most expensive patterns they had and got discontinued after only five years. We heard that they had a lot of problems with the pattern, but really didn't know what the problem was until long after the pattern got discontinued. If you search for it, you'll notice it's a very simple pattern. That's what the problem was, it was too simple. So if there was any defect when the crystal was being made, like bubbles in the glass, it showed. If the etchers made a mistake in the pattern, it showed. We found out the reason why my pattern was so cheap was because it was so intricate. If there were glass bubbles or a mistake, they could just etch it out because the pattern was so detailed. The whole thing gave my mom a laugh because up until that point, it was me that was picking patterns that she called having champagne dreams when we had a beer budget. Your sister was lucky she got her pieces at a good price. If the mistakes are found before they leave the factory, they don't leave. Instead, they get broken up and the pieces are melted down and reused. |

Yeah, my FIL was telling me about this piece he saw that looked extraordinary to him just get smashed onto the ground and swept into a can when they toured the factory. He was kind of walking over his jaw about it. Told him about an article that National Geographic did on glass. There was one artist in it that use to be an industrial glassblower that made these little glass "moss" people and encased them in glass with only two out of three of the projects being successful and he was getting paid upwards of 20000 to 30000 dollars for a six inch high piece. Told him when I read that I thought glassmaking is something I really ought to get into. (Unfortunately, I never did because the cheapest classes here are $500 and that's just to make a paperweight.) Anyway, yeah, my mom and I didn't find out the problem until we went in and order 4 goblets as a graduation present about 3 or 4 months beforehand. The department store told us they'd call when the goblets were ready for pick up. About ten days before my sister's graduation, my mom told me the store still hadn't called and we both wondered if they simply forgot. We went in and talked to the saleslady that was taking care of the order and she told us that she had to send the order back 3 times at that point because of air bubbles in the glasses and that the 4th order would show up a week or two after my sister graduated. Long story short, order came in, my mom and sister went to check on it/pick them up, brought two home and had to reorder two because of chips and bubbles in the glass. The pattern got discontinued right after that. My sister got her last 4 sometime later (Mom got us each 8 wine and 8 water goblets and if we wanted anything else we'd be getting ourselves -- her words). Mom told my sister she was glad it was over because the last 4 she had to pay a king's ransom for. Last time I looked and it's been a while, people were asking anywhere between $200 to $250 a stem for that pattern, so she was very fortunate to get them before the prices on them went totally nuts. |

Speaking of glassware, my brother-in-law has these antique glasses from his family. Unfortunately, a few have gotten broken from use during the Holiday season. But, the cool thing about these glasses is that they look like the glasses that were used in Casablanca. At least that's what it looks like. I went to see the movie on the big screen a few years ago, and they really did look like a spitting image.
