In Between, TBW 3.14x, Antidote
This snippet is just after the close of “The Antidote." Dr. Rudy Wells had just declared Jaime was on the road to recovery from her poisoning.
* * *
Steve had been at the Middle East Peace Summit as Oscar's unofficial bodyguard and so he could covertly negotiate behind the scenes with members of the various factions.

Once Oscar had a secure phone line midair in the plane on their way home, he learned from Callahan that Jaime had been poisoned and had refused to swap her life for his. She told him it had been very close. The only thing that kept Oscar from showing his pain was the proximity of Steve to him in the plane. Steve was keenly aware Oscar had received some bad news. The final peace agreement had yet to be signed. Oscar was the key player and still a target to terrorist. Steve planned to stay tight.

After the limo driven by Sam, Oscar’s loyal driver, dropped them at OSI, it was near 6 p.m. Before they stepped out, Oscar placed his hand on Steve’s arm. “Steve, why don’t you shower and get cleaned up. I might need you later.”

Steve nodded his agreement and delivered Oscar to his office. “I’ll meet you in your office in an hour.” He nodded to Rudy who was waiting inside Oscar’s office before Oscar shut the door on Steve. He noticed Callahan was at her desk and appeared to be waiting to be summoned. “Callahan, you’re working late! Don’t let Oscar keep you too long.”

“I’ve been out a bit lately so it’s no problem, Colonel!”

Steve saw the remnants of a horrible bruise on her neck that she appeared to be trying to cover with a scarf. “What's with your neck? Are you okay?”

“It’s nothing! I had a car smash up a few days ago. The bruise is almost gone. I’m fine.”

“Well, Callahan, you be careful. Any time you want some driving lessons let me know.”

“Colonel! I wasn’t…Thanks for the offer, Steve! Good night!”

Steve regretted hurting Callahan's feelings but said nothing as he left for the OSI gym and Rudy’s office where he kept changes of clothes. Callahan is acting odd—I’ll have to look into it—hopefully she’s not dating again!”

Inside Oscar’s office, Rudy briefed Oscar on the events surrounding Jaime. Oscar paced and angrily vented his frustrations of almost having a woman die for him—let alone someone he considered his daughter! He also learned from Rudy a longtime Russian diplomat had succumbed to the poison. Oscar and Ambassador Zuchov had often played chess as a way to exchange information and they had become diplomatic friends over the years. The loss hit Oscar hard. Rudy, having returned early, but refreshed, from his enforced fishing trip, permitted Oscar to vent and fed him the information Oscar needed to make informed decisions.

Soon Oscar pressed the intercom and asked Callahan to have Russ join the two men in his office. Russ, having been alerted by Callahan that Oscar had returned, quickly entered through his connecting door into Oscar’s office.

“Russ, why did you let this happen? We now got to mop up William’s actions at the Russian Embassy and at the Georgia base! Damn it! You knew where Rudy was (located)?"

Russ accepted his role as the target for Oscar’s concern. “Sir, I knew nothing until Callahan returned from the hospital and Rudy had already been flown here.” Russ stopped Oscar from pushing the button to summon Callahan. “Sir, she’s just a secretary and she was with Jaime in the car when Jaime cracked it up. She’s hiding a whopping bruise from the seatbelt and a sprained wrist. She was pretty shook up herself but she called Sarah and that quick action according to Rudy here saved Jaime.”

Rudy added quietly, “Sarah was the one who notified Williams.”

“Oh blast it all!” Oscar blurted out. He stood up and began to pace his office while the two men waited their instructions. Oscar thrust out additional questions he needed answered to the men. He threw what seemed to be a random question to Russ, “Where do we stand with the atomic commission for reporting the loss of Jaime’s bionic battery?”

“We need to return the battery case showing it to be damaged. I also learned they have secretly numbered each one before issuing them to Rudy.”

Oscar then put all the plans together. The men present knew not to question his instructions—Oscar kept the big picture in his head with the details only known to him. “Russ, I want to temporarily swap secretaries with you. You take Callahan with you on your trip to Boston and you two work on the budget there.”

“But, sir, I was planning to stay at my family’s estate.” Russ protested.

“All the better! She needs to be tucked away until the peace treaty is signed and that terrorist organization is nipped.” (Oscar also thought the two needed to spend time together. He could not have Callahan, even injured, not recognize that Russ was the first person to call when he and Steve were absent.)

“Yes sir!” Russ responded.

“Set Sam up to deliver her to her apartment to obtain clothing when she's done here. Then please call the State’s diplomatic corps to find out how I can pay my respects to Ambassador Zuchov. (And hopefully have an opportunity to apologize for Williams’ actions there and find out the damage he did bringing Max with him.”

“Yes sir!”

"Rudy, I want you to take Williams to Los Angeles. You two can search the rubble and locate what’s left of Jaime’s bionic battery pack. Williams know where to look. Then turn it over to Russ to follow the protocol. Williams told me how she lost her battery pack. He also informed me the crystal you were developing needs to be accelerated. You may find crystal remnants at the site." Pointing to a briefing book Russ had placed on his desk, “I see Russ succeeded in getting that project funded while I was gone. I need you to keep Williams occupied. Got it?”

“Sure, Oscar!” The men (and Steve) knew Williams had been a plant by the CIA as a “shared employee.” With the new budget cycle coming up Oscar had both the CIA and NSB trying to find a way to merge the OSI (and its budget dollars) into their own agencies.

“Can Jaime be moved tonight?”

Rudy nodded “yes.” “But she’s very weak and still a bit uncoordinated with the poison having exhausted her.”

“Okay, go now! Without anyone knowing, prepare Max to go with her as her protection. Send Callahan in on your way out.”

Russ and Rudy left and nodded to Callahan to enter. She did as Steve, freshly showered, entered Callahan’s exterior office. Steve was set to follow after her and Rudy put a hand on his shoulder to stop him. “Give them a few minutes.” Rudy looked at his protective detail waiting outside and nodded and they took off with him back to the hospital.

After a few minutes, Callahan came out with tears still in her eyes. She reached for a tissue as she told Steve. “He’s waiting for you.” Oscar had comforted Callahan and had let her pent up tears at the near loss of her best friend intertwine with his own as he held her in a bear hug. He then quietly reminded her next time to make Russ her first call before giving her instructions.

Steve walked into his office ready to lay it on Oscar for making Callahan cry. Oscar was pouring himself a shot glass of Russian vodka—something Oscar did not particularly like. Oscar quietly said, “I’d offer you one too but you need to pilot a plane shortly.” Oscar paused and then toasted an imaginary person before finally saying, “Ambassador Zuchov is dead. I understand Jaime would be too if not for Callahan staying by her side.”

Steve plopped in a chair.

Oscar continued, "Rudy’s preparing her for release from the Cory Medical Center. She’s quite weak according to Rudy. I need you to fly her and Max covertly out of here tonight. Callahan’s contacting Silver Cloud to ask him if we can stuff her on his Navajo reservation while she gets her strength back. If so, Jaime is a teacher sent to evaluate school books needed by the Indian schools.”

“Sure, Oscar.” Steve got up to leave—he needed some time alone.

“When you return I want you to focus on finding the terrorist that did this to Dimitri and Jaime. The NSB and Williams messed up the investigation." He paused. "And, Steve, you also need to know Williams has made a play for Jaime and they’re dating. Rudy will keep Williams otherwise occupied (for the time being).”

“Got it.” Steve swallowed hard and then exited the door. The more quickly he delivered Jaime, safe and secure, the faster he could move to isolate the terror cell. He’d process Jaime’s relationship with Williams when he had the luxury of time. Steve briefly met with Sam to insure Oscar was guarded before leaving for the hospital.

Back in his office Oscar thought about Jaime and Steve, two people with solid judgment in their work life, but utterly dismal with their dating choices. He was so mad at times with Steve who could not get past Jaime’s lack of memories of him. He knew Jaime loved him but had given up. Everyone around them knew the two were destined to be together. Meanwhile the two had dalliances with utterly inappropriate mates. He understood their need for human connection. With the equipment under their bionic skin, it prevented them from getting close to anyone. But this time he was not sure about Williams.

He picked up his secure phone, “Honey, I’m home. Is it too late for dinner?”

Author's Note: I pulled the character, Silver Cloud, from the SMDM episode, "To Catch an Eagle," to make a plausible reason for Jaime having met Tommy in "Out of Body." Have a wonderful Christmas, readers!

That was AMAZING! You were quite nimble at catching the balls that the series' own writers left up in the air, especially the questions they just left dangling about Williams). And you showed Oscar at his very best - delegating and assigning responsibilities and asserting his well-earned authority - all of it with compassion in his heart. And the last line... so intriguing! I hope we'll learn more about 'Honey' in future im-betweens!
