In Between, TBW 3.15x, The Martians Are Coming This snippet is post “The Martians Are Coming, The Martians Are Coming!” after Jaime has spent some time with the news reporter, Casey. * * * Jaime was stretched out in the Coach House on her orange sofa with an afgan Helen had made over her. She had built a fire in the fireplace to ward off the chill she felt in her heart. It was lonely. She and Casey had returned from a camping trip to Yosemite National Park. Upon arriving at her Coach House, the phone was ringing and Casey ran off to an interview with a major network. She was excited for him—it was a great opportunity for a man that wanted to make the anchor chair someday. He left after telling her how much he appreciated their friendship—code word for he’d keep her secret. The two had bonded in the forest on their hikes and shared meals over a campfire. She liked Casey—he was a good man. She yearned to date someone like him—with depth and passion—but that was an elusive illusion. That conjured up her anger toward the men—and Callahan—who had manhandled her since her poisoning. Rudy had sedated her while she was still in the hospital so Steve could sweep her off by plane to a remote Navajo Indian Reservation where she had remained for two whole weeks. While she would admit (only to herself) that she had been a bit weak from the poisoning she did not appreciate being manhandled. She was no frail flower. She then had to push Oscar to activate her to find Rudy over that stupid Martian flap. Since then she had been unable to reach Oscar or Callahan or Chris or Steve or Russ—with a fill in secretary for Oscar keeping her out of the loop! That would end soon! She still seethed knowing that Steve had requested Rudy drug her. The man was a genius at avoiding her. Steve’s friend, Chief Silver Cloud, had provided her with a guide when she was more steady. Tommy Littlefoot had escorted her about the reservation schools. She had discovered Tommy to be a brilliant man and a comedian! She insured an interview with Rudy when he came to check on her health and pronounce her healthy to go home. Rudy then took off with Tommy in tow! Was she destined to be a bionic single woman while Steve threw himself into all the dalliances she would (bionic) overhear at OSI headquarters? Deep down she understood him—there was no one she could get close to—either—except him—and he clearly made her aware he was no longer interested. What did they once have? She wished she could remember! Arrgh! Chris Williams? She had not really considered him seriously—he was a bit bland—but what he had done to save her—she could never discount. And he knew—and did not treat her differently—well at least not after his first unkind words—but was that really telling her of his deep down feelings? She knew he was lent by the CIA to the OSI. It was odd that he followed Rudy around—she knew there were ulterior inter-agency plays always in motion—in fact she recognized he struggled within himself. He was truly a good person. Could she help him to not be so “boring”? Having just faced her mortality, she again reminded herself of things she wanted to accomplish in her life. Ambassador Zuchov. So sad. He had so much to contribute to this world—a message of peace. Her time with OSI had amplified the true goodness of many in the world. Yes, she experienced seeing pure evil—but she had been blessed to be enlightened with learning so many people in life were good like the Ambassador—they just came at it in different ways and cultures. She dreamed of the days when she’d be free of her obligation to OSI and could contribute in her own way—and just what way would it be? She knew she wanted to teach a larger audience than her classroom. Classroom! She needed to get a move on her lesson plans—she was cleared to start school tomorrow! She needed to see about taking the kids on a field trip to the reservation. In fact, she needed to make another call to Oscar’s office to see that the promised school books for the reservation had been ordered—she would see that through! It’d be so much easier with Callahan… She had learned from Oscar’s fill in secretary that Callahan and Russ were off together on some assignment. Hmm! He’d insure Callahan stayed out of trouble—if it were possible. “Well lollygagging around is not going to get anything done.” She rose and began to plan her Sunday afternoon; but first she needed to retrieve Max from his babysitters. Another great installment! You do an excellent job of getting inside Jaime's head and exploring her feelings. Keep it up. |

I've really been enjoying your series of 'In Between' vignettes - and this look into Jaime's thoughts and mindset was especially fascinating. Your affinity to this character shines through so clearly, and I hope you'll be treating us to many more entries in this wonderfully imaginative series! - |
